Migrate from an operating system that is no longer supported

Use the migration tools to migrate an earlier WebSphere Application Server V5.x or 6.0.x release that is running on an operating system that V6.1 does not support. See Overview of migration, coexistence, and interoperability and Premigration considerations.

For help in troubleshooting problems when migrating, see Troubleshooting migration.

Before migrating from WAS V5.x or 6.0.x, use the backupConfig command or your own preferred backup utility to back up your existing configuration if you want to be able to restore it to its previous state after migration. See backupConfig command. Verify you note the exact name and location of this backed-up configuration.

Procedure

  1. Run the WASPreUpgrade command.

    See WASPreUpgrade command.

Run the command from the migration\bin (or migration/bin) directory in the platform_root of the WAS VV6.1 disk.

  2. Shut down the WAS V5.x or 6.0.x release by stopping all server nodes in the configuration.

  3. Tar or zip the backup directory, and FTP it to another system.

  4. Install the new operating system, keeping the same host name.

If possible, keep the system name and passwords the same as on the old system. Place any database files related to applications that you are migrating in the same path as on the previous system. In general, try to keep paths the same. If you do change paths and names, refer to Migrating to a V6.1 standalone appserver on a remote machine. Make any changes before running the WASPostUpgrade command as described in a later step.

  5. FTP the backup directory from the other system, and unzip it.

  6. Install WAS VV6.1.

See Installing the product and additional software.

  7. Use the Profile Management tool or the manageprofiles command to create a WAS VV6.1 profile.

See Creating profiles through the graphical user interface or manageprofiles command.

  8. Run the WASPostUpgrade command from the V6.1app_server_root/bin directory. Specify the backup directory that you unzipped in step 6. See WASPostUpgrade command for the proper command syntax.

    app_server_root\bin\WASPostUpgrade WAS_HOME\migration
