Coexistence support
Coexistence is a state in which multiple installations and multiple nodes from different versions of WAS run independently in the same environment at the same time.
As it applies to WebSphere Application Server products, coexistence primarily refers to the ability of multiple installations of WAS to run independently on the same machine at the same time. Multiple installations include multiple versions and multiple instances of one version. Coexistence also implies various combinations of Web server interaction. WAS Version 6.1 products can coexist with the following supported versions:
- IBM WAS V5.0.x
- IBM WAS ND V5.0.x
- IBM WAS Enterprise V5.0.x
- IBM WAS V5.1.x
- IBM WAS ND V5.1.x
- IBM WAS V6.0.x
- IBM WAS ND V6.0.x
All combinations of V5.x products, V6.0.x products, and V6.1 products can coexist so long as there are no port conflicts.
WebSphere Application Server V5.x and V6.0.x clients can coexist with V6.1 clients.

Multiple V6.1 installation instances on one machine include the following combinations:
- Multiple appserver profiles from multiple installations of the WAS product
- Multiple appserver profiles from a single installation of the WAS product
Restrictions on using mixed-release cells:
- You can upgrade a portion of the nodes in a cell to WebSphere Application Server V6.1 while leaving others at the older release level. This means that, for a period of time, you might be administering servers that are at the current release and servers running the newer release in the same cell.
Note that in this mixed-release environment, there might be some restrictions on what you can do with servers at the older release level. For details, see Creating appservers. There might also be restrictions on creating clusters and cluster members. For details, see Creating clusters.
- A WAS V6.1 deployment cell can contain mixed releases of V5.x or 6.0.x nodes, but there is no mixed-node management support for V6.0.0.x and V6.0.1.x. The V6.1 migration tools still migrate these nodes during deployment-manager migration, but they issue a warning message that the nodes cannot be managed by the V6.1 deployment manager. You can then do one of the following based on your needs:
- Upgrade all V6.0.0.x and V6.0.1.x nodes to at least Version 6.0.2. This will allow them to be administered by a V6.1 deployment manager.
- Immediately migrate these nodes to V6.1.
