Set up a cluster

For high availability production environments, set up a clustered deployment of multiple servers running IBM® WebSphere® Portal Express and IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment.

WebSphere Portal Express relies on the function provided by WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment to build, manage, and tune clusters of servers. For detailed information on important topics related to clustering, such as cells, nodes, and profiles, refer to the appropriate information center:

These instructions can be used to set up a cluster in either a horizontal or vertical scaling topology, or with a combination of horizontal and vertical scaling topologies.

These instructions are numbered in the sequential order in which they should be followed. After completing a section where there was a choice, for example when installing on a managed or unmanaged node, click on the parent topic link at the bottom of the file and then continue to the next topic.

In the event of a problem during deployment of WebSphere Portal Express in a cell or cluster, use the steps outlined in the section Uninstalling WebSphere Portal Express from a cluster to clean up the deployment manager configuration.

  1. Installing WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment on the deployment manager machine
IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment on the deployment manager machine must be installed to the same product revision level as the WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment levels used on the cluster nodes and must have the same corrective service levels applied.

  2. Installing and federating the primary node
When installing WebSphere Portal Express into a cluster environment, install the primary node. The applications installed on this primary node will be shared by the cluster members. You can install WebSphere Portal Express to a node that is already managed by the deployment manager, or you can install to a new profile before federating the profile.

  3. Creating the cluster
After the primary node is installed and running as a managed node under deployment manager control, create the cluster.

  4. Optional: Installing and federating secondary nodes
After the primary node is federated into the cell and the cluster is created, you can expand the capacity of the cluster by adding additional nodes. This is only necessary if you are using horizontal scaling with your cluster.

  5. Adding cluster members
After you have created the cluster, you can add additional cluster members to perform workload management and improve the availability of your applications. You can add horizontal cluster members on different machines or vertical cluster members on the same machine.

  6. Optional: Enabling LDAP security after cluster creation
You can change the type of security you are using after you have created the cluster. For example, you might want to switch from the database user registry security that is provided by default when you install IBM WebSphere Portal Express to security based on an LDAP user registry.
