Work with instances of composite applications
Portal administrators can see their applications in the application catalog, while other users can see only those applications that are available to them. You open an application by clicking its name in the catalog. Each application has one or more pages that contain its components. If you have permission to edit an application, its members, and its pages, you can see the actions that are available to you from the menu of an application page.
Before you can perform this procedure, have permission to work with applications, application membership, and applications pages.
To work with an application, follow these general steps:
After you open a portlet for an application task, refer to the Help topics for more information about the task.
- From the applications catalog, click the name of an application to open it.
- Customize the first page of the application.
If you simply want to add components to the application page, use the Portlets palette. Open an application to the page where you want to add a component. Then open the Portlets palette and drag a component from the list of portlets onto the page of the application.
- Create as many pages as you need for the application.
Use IBMWeb Content Manager to create pages in composite applications is not supported.
- From the menu of an application page, choose to perform any of the following tasks:
- Edit Application Properties
- Edit Application Layout
- Assign Application Members
- Manage Application Roles
- Show Policy Status
- Save Application as Template
- New Page
- Edit Page Layout
- Edit Page Properties
- Assign Page Permissions
- Delete Page
The menu choices that you see will depend on the level of access that you have for editing applications, application membership, and application pages. Each menu choice opens a portlet where you perform the task.
1. Edit application properties
Each application property -- application name, category, description, friendly URL, backup option, and owner -- describes a basic element of the composite application. Use the Properties portlet to edit application properties. When you edit the properties of an application, you change only the properties of that particular application; the template is not affected.
Each application consists of portal pages that contain the components (portlets) used by teams. Use the Template Layout portlet or the Application Layout portlet to create new pages or to edit existing pages of an application template or a particular application.
Use the Roles portlet to create and manage template and application roles. Each role defines access to the template or the application and to pages and application components. User access to application templates and applications is derived from the portal access control settings that you specify using the Resources Permissions portlet and refined by the membership roles that you create and manage using the Roles portlet.
4. Assign members to applications
The membership component of an application lists and categorizes the names of application members by their roles. Both individuals and groups can be members of an application.
If you have the appropriate access, you can manage application membership by adding members, reassigning roles, and removing members.
6. View application status based on policy
If you are an administrator or application manager, you can use Policy Status to view the status of an application based on the current policy in force for an application. If you need to change the assigned policy, you can do so by editing the Policy Selection Attribute. Then you can view the updated application status based on the new policy assignment.
7. Saving an application as a new application template
You might want to save an instance of an application as a new application template. Then others can use the template when they create applications.
If you own or manage an application, you can delete it. The applications catalog is the only context where you can delete an application.
