Use the Application Template Library

The Application Template Library displays all templates that are available to you, sorted alphabetically by template name. Use the Application Template Library to create new application templates, import application templates, and manage application templates. You must have permission to work with application templates. Creating a new template

You can create a new template from an existing template (including a blank template) or from a composite application.

  1. From the Application Template Library, click New.

  2. Type a unique name for the new template. To track different versions of a template, append a number to the template name.

  3. Select a category for the template or click New Category and type a new category name. The category is used to organize the templates in the Application Template Library and to classify the type of application that this template defines. Categories are available for selection when users create applications and for filtering the applications catalog. The default category is the Root template folder. If you create a new template category, an application category of the same name is automatically created.

  4. Optional

Type a brief description of the new template.

  5. Select a starting point, which can be either a copy of an existing template or a blank template.

  6. Click OK to save the new application template.

  7. Optional

Alternatively, save an application as a new template:

    1. Go to the Application Library page.

    2. From the applications catalog, open an application.

    3. From the page menu of the application, click Save Application as Template.

    4. Type a name and a description for the new application template; then click OK.

Import a template

You can customize an application template by importing a template definition from your file system. If you are importing a template definition created with a previous version of the product, you import the XML file that stores the definition. If you are importing a template definition created with this version of the product, you import the .zip file that stores the definition. When you import an application template, specify the category for the imported template. To import an application template, follow these steps:

  1. From the Application Template Library, click Import.

  2. Select the category that you want the imported template to have.

  3. Name of the file that contains the application template that you want to import. The file specified must contain a valid application template definition.

  4. Click OK. If a template with the file name specified already exists in the template list, you are prompted to perform one of these actions:

    • Choose to replace the existing template with the one that you are importing. This choice is available if you have Editor access to the existing template and the template is not locked.

    • Import the template using a new, unique name.

    • Cancel the operation.

View and editing a template

To customize a template or view details about it, click the menu icon of the application template. The template menu displays the actions that are available to you, depending on your access rights to work with application templates.

From the menu of an application template, perform one or more of the actions available to you:

For more information, refer to the Help topics that are available for each task that you begin from the menu of an application template.

Unlocking a template

An application template is automatically locked when someone edits it so that no one else can edit the template at the same time. When the editing session ends, the lock is released. If you are an administrator or the template owner and unlock a template, you can perform this action from the template menu.

If an application template is locked and unlock it, follow these steps:

  1. Open the menu of the locked template.

  2. Click Unlock Template. The template properties are displayed along with a warning.

  3. If you are certain that you want to unlock the template that is being edited by another user, click Unlock.

Exporting a template

After you customize an application template, you can export it by saving the template definition as a .zip file.

  1. From the menu of the application template, click Export Template.

  2. In the file manager of your operating system, specify file compression and the path for the .zip file that will store the template definition.

  3. Click OK.

After you save the template definition as a .zip file, the application template is listed in the Application Template Library. Now you can assign template permissions to grant user access to work with the template. You and other users will be able to work with the application template, using the task choices that are available from the template menu.

Set template roles

Template roles refine the user access to application templates that you grant using Administration > Access > Resource Permissions > Select Resource Type > Application Templates. The roles that you create and manage for application templates are inherited by the application instances created from the template. Therefore, template roles correspond to application roles.

  1. From the menu of the application template, click Manage Roles.

  2. View the default roles: Administrators and Users. Administrators can edit the template and applications created from the template, and they can manage application membership. You cannot delete the Administrators role.

  3. Click Administrators to edit the Administrators role.

  4. Click Users to edit the Users role.

  5. Click New to create one or more new roles for users of the template.

  6. Click Save to return to the Application Template Library.

For more information about editing roles, refer to the Help for the Roles portlet.

delete an application template.

  1. From the menu of the application template, click Delete Template.

  2. Confirm the deletion or cancel the operation.

Assigning access to application templates

Assign user access to work with application templates by assigning and editing user roles in Resource Permissions. A role determines the permissions that users in the role have for working with the template. Roles can be explicitly assigned to users; implicitly assigned to users by their membership in a group; or inherited from a parent resource. To assign user access to an application template, follow these steps:

  1. From the menu of an application template, select Assign Template Permissions. This action displays the Resource Permissions page for the application template. The name of the application template is shown at the top of the page along with the template category qualified by the root category.

  2. If you need more information about using Resource Permissions, from the portlet menu, click Help.
