Migrating from other IBM JVMs

Considerations when migrating from earlier versions of the IBM SDK and JRE.

The IBM SDK for Windows, V7 contains many new features and functions compared with earlier releases. For an overview, read the What's new section.

If you are migrating from an older IBM Runtime Environment, note that:

• The default garbage collection policy in force is now the Generational Concurrent garbage collector, known as Gencon. For an overview, see Generational Concurrent Garbage Collector.
• From service refresh 4, the SDK uses the Oracle implementation of the java.util.* package, including all classes within the package. Earlier releases of the SDK used customized versions of the Apache Harmony class libraries. This change establishes a common implementation point for the java.util.* package, enabling consistent performance and behavior characteristics across Java implementations.
