iSeries upgrade concepts

 

An upgrade is the process of changing from one server, hardware feature, or software version to another server, hardware feature, or software version while retaining the serial number of the source server.

This topic describes the process for upgrading your server and includes some considerations for upgrading a partitioned server. The topic also defines which servers you can upgrade to the iSeries™ servers and the process of activating additional processors.

• Upgrade process
  The upgrade process includes planning, ordering, preparing for, and performing the upgrade. Use this information to learn the flow and timing for upgrading a nonpartitioned server.

• Partitioned-server upgrades
  Upgrading a partitioned server is more complex than upgrading a server without partitions. When upgrading a partitioned server, consider these points.

• Upgrade paths
  In an upgrade, the target server retains the same serial number as the source server. Before you upgrade your server, consider this information regarding valid upgrade paths.
