Rearranging portlets on a page

You can change the placement of individual portlets on a page using the drag-and-drop feature of the portal.

The drag-and-drop feature is present for all themes and for row and column containers that are not locked. You should be logged into the portal site using an ID with sufficient access rights to modify a page.

Refer to the following topics for rearranging portlets on a page and possible restrictions:

Rearranging portlets on a page

Perform the following steps for rearranging portlets on a page:

  1. Move the mouse toward the portlet title bar until your cursor changes to display the move indicatorMove indicator and then click on the portlet title bar. Horizontal bars will appear over potential areas on the page where it is permissible to drop the portlet.

  2. Drag the portlet to a destination on the page. When you drag the portlet within close proximity of a permissible drop zone, the color of the horizontal bar changes from a muted to a more saturated tone.

  3. Drop the portlet to the page by releasing the mouse key to move the portlet to a new destination on the page.

To cancel dropping the portlet on the page, you can drop the portlet over a destination on the page where it is not permissible to drop the portlet, or you can drop the portlet outside of the browser window.

Accessible alternatives for rearranging portlets on a page

A mouse is required to use the drag-and-drop feature of the portal. Alternatively, you can use your keyboard to rearrange portlets on a page as an accessible alternative to dragging portlets to a new destination on the page. Perform the following steps to rearrange a portlet on a page:

  1. Go to the page that contains the portlet that you want to move.

  2. Select the Tab key until you access the drop-down menu beside the page title.

  3. Select the Enter key and use the up or down arrows as appropriate until you highlight Edit Page Layout.

  4. From Edit Layout located on the Content page, select the Tab key until you highlight the appropriate arrow button for the portlet. The arrow buttons show the direction that you can move the portlet: left, right, up or down.

  5. Select the Enter key to move the portlet in the direction of the arrow.

  6. Select the Tab key until you highlight Done.

  7. Select the Enter key.

Restricting the movability of portlets on a page

You can define widths for containers. You can use this feature to restrict the possibility for users to move portlets on a page. The portal provides this functionality by a portlet placement filter or width filter. This width filter compares width of a portlet to the width of a column container. If the width of the portlet is larger than that of the container, the portlet cannot be moved to this container.

Notes:

  1. To use the width filter with portal Version 6.0 or 6.0.0.1, you have to have PK38951 installed.

  2. Version 6.0.1 and later Portal Version 6.0.1 and all following versions include the width filter functionality.
To use the width filter, proceed by the following steps:

  1. Enable the filter in the portal configuration service by setting the property PortletPlacementFilterImpl to the value com.ibm.wps.model.filters.portletplacement.impl.WidthFilterImpl. For details about how to do this refer to Setting configuration properties.

  2. Set the maximum width for the portlet as required. To do this, use the portlet for managing portlets and add the portlet parameter MAX_WIDTH with a positive numeric value. The value specifies pixels. Percent values are ignored by the width filter.

  3. Set the width for a column container as required. Use a positive numeric value. The value specifies pixels. Percent values are ignored by the width filter. To set the width for a column container, proceed by the following steps:

    1. Select the option for editing the page layout.

    2. Select the option for configuring the portlet or editing its shared settings.

    3. Check the box for showing the toggle link for showing or hiding the layout tools and click OK.

    4. Click the link for showing the layout tools.

    5. Click the double arrow for setting the column width,

    6. Type a numeric value into entry field. The value specifies pixels. Percent values are ignored by the width filter.

    7. Click OK. A message confirms that you have set the column container width.
