Integrating desktop applications with Document Manager

An introduction to desktop components.

IBM® WebSphere® Portal Document Manager desktop components integrate with your Microsoft Windows desktop, providing you with an easy, convenient way to work with documents using familiar desktop applications, such as Microsoft® Word, on your local computer. After installing the Document Manager desktop components on your computer, you can work in document libraries directly on your desktop. Use your Windows Explorer to view document libraries to which you have access, work with documents and folders, and contribute content to the server.

Notes about desktop components

Desktop components are supported only on the Windows platform.

Before you can use the desktop components, be able to connect to a server that has Document Manager available, and also provides the desktop components download and install option. Check with your system administrator to find out which server you should use.

You cannot use the desktop components to create a new document library. You can only work within existing document libraries to which you have access.

When using desktop components from a terminal client, popup messages from the Document Manager Upload Monitor may not appear in the terminal services client where you are working. Instead, the messages appear on the original terminal where the monitor was started. This includes the password prompt dialog if you elected not to save the password for your server connection.

To use desktop components in Catalan, install the English base Windows XP operating system, then apply the Catalan language pack. If this is not done, desktop components is displayed in Spanish instead of Catalan.

When using desktop components in Chinese, the words Last Modified are not translated correctly to Chinese. This is a known limitation of desktop components.
