Process: Discontinue product

Flow

Legend

Objective

Discontinue an existing product and create the announced replacement in the master and sales catalogs.

Description

Businesses often receive advanced notice from suppliers or manufacturers when products are to be discontinued. At the same time, they may also include the product information for a new replacement product. The discontinued product will usually be identified by setting new product information such as a discontinue date, withdrawal date, and a product, existing or announced, which will replace the product. When a reseller receives a discontinue notice from the manufacturer, any affected kits and bundles that contain the manufacturer's product need to be updated. Based on the product plan, the customer may provide custom logic to not display the product immediately but complete outstanding orders, continue to accept orders until supply runs out or the discontinue date is reached, or continue to provide the product but ship an alternative or the replacement product.

Tasks

Task Description Role
Define replacement product

The Product Manager creates an association between the discontinued product and the new announced product. This association can be used in marketing campaign initiatives that schedule and provide content to e-Marketing Spots within JSP files.

Product Manager
Set product state

A product can have associated states to indicate its stage in the life cycle: Announced Product, Available Product, Discontinued Product, or Withdrawn Product. The product state can include dates to indicate the next state change

Product Manager
Update affected kits

Any kits or bundles that contain the discontinued product need to be updated. Updates can take the form of one or more of the following:

  • The kit is also marked as discontinued.
  • The kit's price and description are modified to reflect the change.
  • The replacement product is substituted in the kit.
