IBM Tivoli Composite Application Manager for Application Diagnostics, Version 7.1.0.1

Overview of the Managing Server

The Managing Server is a J2EE application. The Managing Server collects information from, and provides services to, the data collectors in your environment.

The Managing Server relies on WAS and IBM DB2 or Oracle, which can be installed either with or prior to installing the Managing Server itself.

The Managing Server consists of the following components:

Kernel

The Kernel controls the Managing Server. The Kernel registers components as they join the Managing Server, periodically renews connections and registrations with components and data collectors, and collects server and component availability information. There can be an additional copy of the Kernel running on a Managing Server for redundancy and failover.

The Watchdog is a lightweight component that manages a particular Kernel. If the Kernel does not respond, the Watchdog process restarts the Kernel. Each Kernel has its own Watchdog process. The Watchdog process must be on the computer where the Kernel is running. If both the Kernel and Watchdog don't respond, then the Kernel won't be restarted. You can check the Watchdog status by using the following command: MS_home/bin/wdctl.sh status

Visualization Engine

The Visualization Engine provides the user interface. It can be accessed through Tivoli Enterprise Portal, or used as a stand-alone option. The Visualization Engine requires WAS (Base or Network Deployment, version 6.0.2 or above); a version of the WAS can be installed by the Managing Server installer. The Visualization Engine can also be installed on the WAS instance that runs the Tivoli Enterprise Portal.

Publish Server

The Publish Server receives data from the data collector and aggregates it based on different needs.

Archive Agent

The Archive Agent collects data from the Publish Server and archives it into the database for reporting.

Message Dispatcher

The Message Dispatcher sends out e-mails of performance reports and trap actions from the Performance Analysis and Reporting and the Trap and Alert Management features.

Global Publish Server (GPS)

The Global Publish server keeps track of Composite Requests, as they move from one server to another.

The Managing Server is designed for scalability and load balancing, and there ways to architect an installation across several servers. Likewise, the installation of IBM DB2 or Oracle used by the Managing Server can be located on a different server than the Managing Server itself. For large scale deployment, consult IBM Software Support for assistance in making these decisions before attempting to install the Managing Server. For information about receiving assistance from IBM Software Support, see Contacting IBM Software Support.
