You can require mobile devices to authenticate themselves. Device identity is used in several places within the Worklight platform.
You can also require mobile devices to authenticate before apps installed on them can access the WL server.
Device and application authentication allows claims of type "this is application A installed on device D".
Device identity is relevant only for applications that are installed on mobile devices.
