Installing HATS

With the information in this chapter you can:

Prerequisites

There are hardware and software prerequisites for the machine where you install HATS Studio, the machine where you deploy HATS applications, and the browsers with which your users will interact with HATS applications. All of these prerequisites are described in this chapter. Check the HATS Information Center for the current list of supported hardware and software prerequisites.

Prerequisites for HATS Studio

HATS Studio is packaged as an Eclipse feature in the Rational Studio workbench. This means Rational Studio must be installed before you install HATS Studio. This section lists the requirements for the machine on which you install HATS Studio.

Software

HATS Studio requires the following software found in Table 2:

Table 2. HATS Version 6.0 supported studio software

Windows

Rational Application Developer 6.0
Rational Web Developer 6.0
Rational Software Architect 6.0
Note:

Hardware

Since HATS Studio is an Eclipse feature in Rational Studio, the hardware requirements are the same as those for the version of Rational Studio you have installed.

Prerequisites for HATS applications

For use in a production environment, HATS applications require a supported version of WebSphere Application Server. HATS applications created in HATS Studio can be deployed to any of following supported server software:

Table 3. HATS Version 6.0 supported server software
Operating System Server Version
AIX

  • WebSphere Application Server V5.1.1 or later

  • WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment V5.1.1 or later

  • WebSphere Application Server Express V5.1.1 or later

  • WebSphere Application Server V6.0*

  • WebSphere Application Server Express V6.0*

  • WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment V6.0*

Solaris
Windows
i5/OS(TM)
z/OS
Linux for Intel
Linux for iSeries (new for HATS V6)
Linux for pSeries (new for HATS V6)
Linux for zSeries
Note:

HATS applications inherit the hardware, operating system, and other software requirements for WebSphere Application Server, except for the following:

Each HATS application that you deploy requires additional disk space. The minimum space required for each HATS application is approximately 30 MB. If you add large graphics, business logic, or other components, your HATS application will require more disk space.

Prerequisites for user browsers

Users interact with HATS applications through a browser. Table 4 shows the supported browser types.

AIX 7.0 or later
Linux 0.9 or later 3.1 or later 1.6 or later 7.0.2 or later 7.0 or later
Macintosh 0.9 or later 5.2.3 or later 7.1 or later 7.0 or later 1.0 or later
Solaris 0.9 or later 1.6 or later 7.0 or later
Windows 0.9 or later 6.0 with Service Pack 1 or later 1.6 or later 6.2.3 or later 7.0 or later
Notes:

  1. Bidirectional (Hebrew and Arabic) applications are supported on Internet Explorer and Mozilla 1.8 or later.

  2. HATS Administration is only supported on browsers WebSphere Application Server supports. For more information about the browsers supported, see software requirements at the WebSphere Application Server system requirements Web site.

  3. With Mozilla, Opera, and Konqueror browsers, the function keys (F1 - F24) and the PageUp and PageDown keys on the keyboard do not perform any function for HATS. To enable the use of these keys in your applications, include a host keypad with these keys to enable the end user to send them to the host.
    Note:
Mozilla does support these functions although the behavior is different. The same behavior is also present when using a Netscape browser. The PageUp and PageDown functions will perform the action on the object selected (such as a dropdown list) first. Then, the actual action (PageUp or PageDown) will be sent to the host in the Mozilla/Netscape browser.

  4. Using the keyboard support in Konqueror, and pressing the Enter key with this browser might interact incorrectly with the host application. For applications that will run in Konqueror browsers, we recommend that you include a host keypad with the Enter key.

  5. With the Safari browser, keyboard support is limited to the Pause ([attn]) and Esc ([clear]) keys. For applications that will run in Safari browsers, we recommend that you include a host keypad with all the keys to enable the end user to send the keys to the host.

  6. For optimal results, Internet Explorer is the recommended browser to use with the HATS asynchronous update applet. Other browsers will work with the HATS applet provided the "local" is unchecked and the "time to wait for disconnect" is sufficiently large. For more information about the HATS asynchronous update applet, see HATS User's and Administrator's Guide.

  7. The HATS asynchronous update applet does not function properly on Macintosh with any supported browser. For more information about the HATS asynchronous update applet, see HATS User's and Administrator's Guide.

  8. When a HATS application is accessed via a Macintosh Internet Explorer or Safari browser, sometimes the Enter key appears not to function properly. This problem occurs when the Web page being viewed does not contain any edit controls such as a button or text edit field. Enable the host keypad and provide a GUI Enter key in such cases. To correct this, do the following:

    • Double-click the project settings document to bring up the Project Settings editor.

    • Click on the Rendering window.

    • On the left side of the Rendering window is a tree view of the Rendering options, click on the Host Keypad option.

    • Select the Show default host keypad check box. Select the check box of each key you want to enable. You must select the Enter key.

Once this is done and the application is rebuilt and deployed, the Enter key is available as part of the template used to present the HATS application.

  9. If you type the Yen character using a Japanese keyboard in your browser, the browser will display a backslash "\" on the screen. This is a browser limitation. However, for Japanese code pages, HATS runtime will convert "\" to the Yen character when sending data back to host.

Installing HATS Studio

Note:
If you want to use the IBM Accessibility Speech Interface, an assistive technology tool for reading the panels presented during the installation of HATS, please refer to Accessibility for HATS installation.

To install HATS Studio:

  1. For Windows , you must be logged on with Administrator privileges.

  2. If HATS Version 6.0 is already installed on your machine, you will need to uninstall it before re-installing. See Uninstalling HATS Studio for information about uninstalling HATS.

  3. Verify that your machine meets all the prerequisites described above, especially having a supported version of Rational Studio installed. Check the HATS Information Center for the current list of supported versions. You need to confirm Rational Studio is installed during installation and identify the Rational Studio Version 6 product where you want to install HATS.

  4. If Rational Studio is running, save all your work and exit.
    Note:
Closing Rational Studio prior to installing HATS Version 6.0 will prevent the need to reboot before starting HATS.

  5. Insert the HATS CD into the CD-ROM drive.

    • For Windows, if you do not have auto-run enabled, execute setup.exe from the root directory of the CD.

  6. The Welcome window appears. From this window you can check the HATS prerequisites, view HATS documentation, visit the HATS Web site, explore the CD, or install the product. IBM recommends that you choose View Documentation and review the Readme file, which contains last-minute information. When you are ready to install HATS Studio, click Install.

  7. In the Installer window click Next.

  8. Accept the Software License Agreement and click Next.

  9. Enter the number of licenses, for either Registered Users or Concurrent Users, that you have purchased. The valid range is from 1-50000. Click Next.
    Note:
When installing the HATS Trial Toolkit version, the panel for the number of licenses does not appear. For more information on the toolkit, see Host Access Transformation Services Trial Toolkit.

  10. The installation program displays the detected Rational Studio products installed.

    • Select the installation of Rational Studio to which you want to install HATS and click Next.

    • If the installation program cannot find a valid version of Rational Studio, it displays a message asking for you to check the HATS System Requirements for the most up to date information. The installation of HATS will not continue without a valid installation of Rational Studio. Click Cancel and install a supported version of Rational Studio. You will be instructed to obtain an updated StudioVersions.properties file from the HATS support Web site.

  11. Take the default HATS install directory, or Browse to where you would like HATS installed. Click Next.

  12. The summary panel presents the installation information. Click Back if you need to change any of the displayed information, or click Next to proceed. The installation program installs HATS and creates Start menu items for Windows.

  13. The completion summary panel informs you that HATS has been installed successfully.

  14. If Rational Studio is running, close and restart it to before using HATS. Click Finish to close the installation wizard.

Installation log file

The installation process creates a log file that you can examine if an error occurs while installing HATS.

The installation log file is %TEMP%\HATSinstall.log, where %TEMP% is the value of the environment variable TEMP. The file will usually be located in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp.

Installing HATS on a Turkish machine

When installing HATS on a machine with Turkish locale, you will see a mixture of English and Turkish translations within the HATS Studio. The reason for this is that while the HATS program material has been translated to the Turkish language, the Rational Studio products have not.

Using silent installation

As an alternative to using the graphical installation wizard, you can use the command line to install HATS silently from the CD. A sample response file is provided which you can edit to match your configuration or you can accept the default values supplied with HATS. The sample file on the CD is located in \instmgr\silenthats.txt. The file contains comments that explain its use. The value specified for each parameter must be enclosed in double quotes.

The response file includes these parameters along with default settings, which you can modify to suit your configuration:

-W LicenseNumber.numberPurchased

Enter the number of licenses you purchased. The valid range is from 1-50000.
Note:
If you are silently installing the HATS toolkit, this parameter is not required.

-P lafiles.licenseAccepted

Enter "True" to accept the license.

-P productHatsStudio.installLocation

Enter the location where you want HATS installed.

-W selectEclipse.selectWhich

Enter the location of the Eclipse directory for Rational Studio. In order to reuse the response file, Rational Studio must be installed in the same location on each machine.

The response file is not copied to your machine during installation. Once you have edited your response file, you can copy it to be used on several machines.

To start silent installation from a command prompt:

  1. From the CD image root directory, change to the instmgr directory by typing cd instmgr.

  2. Copy silenthats.txt to your hard drive and modify it if necessary to match your configuration.

  3. To install silently, type hatsinstall_win32 -options <path>\silenthats.txt -silent. For example, hatsinstall_win32 -options "C:\temp\silenthats.txt" -silent.

The silent installation process does not issue messages if it cannot find your response file or if the contents of the response file are invalid. If you use silent installation, be sure to review the installation log file to verify that the installation completed successfully.

Note:
If the path or response filename is invalid, a log file is not created. Check that the path and response filename are valid.

See Installation log file for more information.

Uninstalling HATS Studio

If you need to uninstall HATS Studio, be logged on with Administrator privileges. Close the HATS perspective and exit from Rational Studio.

Uninstall for Windows:

  1. There are three ways to uninstall HATS Studio:

    • Click on the Uninstall HATS link from the Start button shortcut found in IBM WebSphere HATS 6.0 > Uninstall HATS

    • Use the Add/Remove Programs application in Control Panel. Select IBM WebSphere Host Access Transformation Services 6.0 then the Change/Remove button

    • From a command line, enter <HATS_install_dir>\uninstall\hatsuninstall_win.exe.

  2. Follow the uninstall wizard to complete the removal of HATS Studio files.

  3. The uninstallation process creates a log file in %TEMP%\HATSuninstall.log, usually located in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp.

To uninstall silently for Windows, run <HATS_install_dir>\uninstall\hatsuninstall_win.exe -silent from the command line.

You should not uninstall Host Access Transformation Services while Rational Studio is running. If you do so, you might encounter these problems:

  • The message on the last uninstallation panel states: "To complete this installation, restart your system." However, the user is uninstalling in this case.

  • The HATS plugin directories are not removed from <HATS_install_dir>\eclipse\plugins after rebooting. The user must manually delete these directories.

To avoid these and other problems, exit from Rational Studio before uninstalling HATS.

Note:
If you wish to install HATS after an uninstall, it is recommended that you reboot your machine to clean up the gskit uninstall files before a new HATS install.

When you uninstall HATS, the files for HATS projects and their resources are not deleted. If you re-install HATS you will be able to work with projects that you have created. To eliminate HATS files, you can delete each project before you uninstall HATS. If you want to delete HATS files after uninstalling HATS, refer to HATS Programmer's Guide for information about file names and locations.

When you start Rational Studio, it always tries to reopen the last perspective that was open. If you plan to uninstall HATS, be sure to close the HATS perspective before you exit Rational Studio. If HATS was the last perspective open, and you uninstall HATS, Rational Studio will issue error messages because it cannot find the files necessary to reopen the HATS perspective.
