Set up a syndication relationship

To set up syndication between libraries on two IBM Lotus Web Content Management applications, establish a relationship between a syndicator on the server containing the data to be replicated and a subscriber on the server that will receive the replicated data.

If you intend to syndicate a library that contains more than 10000 items, update the maximum Java heap size used by the portal appserver on the subscriber machine.

  1. In the administrative console for IBM WAS, click...

Servers | Application Servers | WebSphere Portal | Java and Process Management | Process Definition | Java Virtual Machine

  2. Update the value in the Maximum Heap Size field. A value of at least 1024 MB is recommended.

  3. Click OK,.

In addition, ensure that you have at least as much swap space allocated on the subscriber machine as you have physical memory.

To set up a syndication relationship, complete the following steps.

  1. Log in to the WebSphere Portal that contains the data that you want to replicate to subscribing servers.

  2. Go to...

Administration | Portal Content | Syndicators

  3. Open the syndicator item.

    Option Description
    Create a new syndicator.

    1. Click Create new syndicator.

    2. Specify a name for the syndicator in the Name field.

    3. Enter additional information about the syndicator in the Description field.

The Syndicator ID and Syndicator URL information is automatically generated, and you cannot change the values for these fields.

Open an existing syndicator. For the syndicator you want to open, click Edit syndicator.

  4. Using a different browser window, log in to the WebSphere Portal that will receive replicated data from the syndicator.

  5. Go to...

Administration | Portal Content | Subscribers

  6. Open the subscriber item.

    Option Description
    Create a new subscriber.

    1. Click Create new subscriber.

    2. Specify a name for the subscriber in the Name field.

    3. Enter additional information about the subscriber in the Description field.

The Subscriber ID and Subscriber URL information is automatically generated, and you cannot change the values for these fields.

Open an existing subscriber. For the subscriber you want to open, click Edit subscriber.

  7. Copy the required item information from one window to the other, depending on the syndication relationship you are setting up.

    Option Description
New syndicator with existing subscriber Copy the subscriber's name, ID, and URL to the syndicator window.
Existing syndicator with new subscriber Copy the syndicator's name, ID, and URL to the subscriber window.
New syndicator with new subscriber Copy required information from each window and paste into the other:

    1. Copy the subscriber's name, ID, and URL to the syndicator window.

    2. Copy the syndicator's name, ID, and URL to the subscriber window.

  8. If you are creating a new syndicator, specify which Web Content Management libraries to replicate.

    • First-time syndication to an existing library is not supported. If you attempt to syndicate a library to a subscriber that already has a library with the same name, an error results.

    • Information about a Library is only syndicated the first time syndication occurs and not on subsequent updates and rebuilds. If a library is renamed or library user access is changed, this information is not syndicated to the Subscriber. If you change the name of a library or change user access to a library, manually make the same changes to any subscriber libraries if you want the same settings on all your syndicated libraries.

    • If content from one library (Library A) uses an item from another library (Library B), include both libraries in the syndicator to ensure that all items are syndicated successfully. If you only include Library A in the syndicator, any items in Library A that reference items in Library B are not syndicated, and syndication errors are generated.

On the syndicator window, complete the following steps:

    1. Click Add libraries.

    2. Select the libraries for replication.

    3. Click OK.

  9. Save the new syndicator or subscriber by clicking OK.

If you are creating the subscriber at the same time as the syndicator, save the syndicator before you save the subscriber.

Two-way syndication

If you are creating a two-way syndication relationship, use a consistent syndication strategy.

For example, if syndicating "All items", then both syndication relationships must be syndicating "All items".
