Planning considerations for LDAP
WebSphere Portal can be configured to use an LDAP directory to store user information and to authenticate users. This section discusses the issues to consider when you use an LDAP directory with WebSphere Portal.
Use the IBM Web Administration for iSeries Create WebSphere Portal wizard when configuring WebSphere Portal instances. The wizard creates the necessary servers (HTTP and WAS), configures the server for Portal, configures the database for Portal, configures security (LDAP) for Portal, and deploys the portlets installed with the WebSphere Portal product. You can edit the Portal instance configuration manually after you have used the WebSphere Portal wizard.
Use the questions below to help plan the LDAP implementation:
- Will you install a new LDAP server or use an existing LDAP server? Verify that the server is supported by WebSphere Portal.
- Where will the LDAP directory be installed? You can install the LDAP server on the same machine as WebSphere Portal or on a remote machine. Installing the LDAP server on a remote machine can improve performance.
- Do you want to secure the data flowing between the LDAP server, WebSphere Portal, and WAS? If so, you need to set up LDAP over SSL.
- Will you use WebSphere Portal collaboration features? If so, you may want to use Domino Directory for the LDAP server.
Only IBM Directory Server and Domino Directory LDAP servers are supported locally.
