Scenario: Local debug development environment for WebSphere Portal V5.0 with DB2 or Oracle on Windows

By default, WebSphere Portal V5.0 installs and uses the Cloudscape database to store information about user identities, credentials, and permission for accessing portal resources. Cloudscape is a WebSphere Portal built-in Java database that is well suited to basic portal environments.

This scenario sets up the "WebSphere Portal V5.0 Test Environment" configuration with the DB2 or Oracle database. If the portal environment requires database software with greater capability and scalability, WebSphere Portal can be configured to use a more robust database, such as DB2 or Oracle. An example limitation would be that Cloudscape does not support vertical cloning or security which is enabled in a database only mode.

When WebSphere Portal V5.0.2.1 Test Environment and an earlier version of WebSphere Portal coexist, the database WebSphere Portal uses must be Cloudscape and you cannot choose this scenario.

  1. Set up local debug development environment
  2. Set up the test environment to use DB2 or Oracle
  3. Verifying the installation

Set up local debug development environment

Refer to one of the following scenarios and carry out the steps:

Set up the test environment for DB2 or Oracle

Refer to Set up the WebSphere Portal V5.0 Test Environment for DB2 or Oracle to transfer data from the Cloudscape database to your preferred database.

Verifying the installation

The installation is completed. To verify the local debug configuration, carry out the following steps:

  1. Launch WebSphere Studio.
    1. Select Start > Programs > IBM WebSphere Studio > Site Developer 5.1.2, Enterprise Developer 5.1.2 or Application Developer Integration Edition 5.1.1 to start the application.
    2. Change the default workspace directory name to a shorter one (one with a short path length such as c:\wssdwork).
  2. From the menu, select File > New > Other > Server > Server and Server Configuration. A wizard will start.
    1. Enter the server name.
    2. In the Server type, expand WebSphere Portal version 5.0.
    3. Select Test Environment and click Finish.
  3. In the Servers view, right-click on the server and select Start.
  4. Verify that the server starts successfully. In the Servers view, its status should be "Started".
