Adding a new I/O adapter on a partitioned server
When adding a new I/O adapter in a partitioned environment, it is essential that detailed planning is performed before starting the new I/O adapters installation. Use this information to help plan and prepare to install a new I/O adapter, and perform resource management.
Recommendation: It is highly recommended that all of the logical partition (LPAR) configuration actions be performed by an LPAR-trained services person.
There are potentially billable activities for moving existing features associated with installing a new I/O adapter. Any other relocation or movement of features or server components is a billable service, which requires a contract for services with IBM. For example, if hardware or features need to be physically rearranged within your system to install auxiliary cache storage, the relocation and movement of the hardware or features would be a billable service.
LPAR Planning and Implementation services will provide a planning session to discuss customer requirements and to provide a final hardware and software configuration and implementation plan. The LPAR services specialist can also install and configure the new LPAR configuration. For more information concerning Integrated Technology Services (ITS) LPAR Planning and Implementation services, contact your IBM marketing representative, or IBM Business Partner, or see Technical Support Services.
To install a new I/O adapter, follow these steps:
- Planning to install a new I/O adapter
A new I/O adapter installation causes changes to the server resources.- Preparing to install a new I/O adapter
Ensure that the currently installed system and logical partitions are fully documented before installing a new I/O adapter. Make sure that these documents represent the most recent configuration of the system and that no hardware changes have been made since printing the documentation.- Performing resource management
Use the information from your preparation and installation to resolve the LPAR configuration error if it appears and to reassign or rename resources, as appropriate.
