(Dist) Install fix packs on distributed operating systems using the GUI
For the most current information about upgrades for WebSphere Application Server offerings, see the IBM Software Support Center and Fix Central.
Verify the web-based or local service repository location is listed and checked or that the Search service repositories during installation and updates option is selected on the Repositories panel in your Installation Manager preferences. For more information about using service repositories with Installation Manager, read the Installation Manager documentation.
Tasks
- Log on to the system.
- Choose whether to install from an online service repository or a local repository containing the fix pack installation files.
- Access the online service repository.
We can install from the service repositories using the same URLs that we used for the initial product installation. These URLs are based on the following pattern, where offering_ID is the offering ID that we can find in WAS product offerings for supported operating systems:
http://www.ibm.com/software/repositorymanager/offering_ID
These URLs do not load in a web browser and can be accessed only by Installation Manager.
- Download files from Fix Central and extract them to create a local repository.
Each compressed fix-pack file contains an Installation Manager repository for the fix pack and usually has a .zip extension. After we download and extract the file, we can use the resulting repository with Installation Manager to update the offering with the fix pack.
- Go to Fix Central.
- Select WebSphere as the product group.
- Select WAS as the product.
- Select your installed product version.
- Select the operating system as the platform, and click Continue.
- Select Browse for fixes, and click Continue.
- Under And fix type, select Fix pack.
- Click More Information under each fix to view information about the fix.
- Select your download options, and click Continue.
- Agree to the terms and conditions by clicking I agree.
- Click Download now.
- Transfer the compressed file in binary format to the system on which it will be installed.
- Extract the compressed repository files to a directory on the system.
- Stop the product installation that we are updating.
- Start Installation Manager.
- Click Update.
If we are prompted to authenticate, use the IBM ID and password used to access protected IBM software websites.
- Select the package group to update.
Tip: If we select Update all, Installation Manager searches all of the added and predefined repositories for recommended updates to all of the package groups installed.
- Use this feature only if we have full control over which fixes are contained in the targeted repositories.
- If we create and point to a set of custom repositories that include only the specific recommended fixes to install, we can confidently use this feature.
- If we enable searching service repositories or install fixes directly from other live web-based repositories, we might not want to select this option so that we can select only the fixes to install for each offering on subsequent panels.
- If we select Update all, Installation Manager installs only the recommended updates to all of the package groups. We cannot select non-recommended fixes for installation. To install non-recommended fixes, perform the following actions:
- On this panel, clear the Update all check box and select an offering to update.
- On the next panel, clear the option to show only recommended fixes and then select the fixes to install.
- Click Next.
- Select the version to which we want to update under the product offering.
- Select any fixes to install.
Any recommended fixes are selected by default.
If there are recommended fixes, we can select the option to show only recommended fixes and hide non-recommended fixes.
- Click Next.
- Accept the terms in the license agreements, and click Next.
- Select the optional features that we want in your updated installation.
- Review the summary information, and click Update.
- If the installation is successful, the program displays a message that indicates that the installation is successful.
- If the installation is not successful, click View Log File to troubleshoot the problem.
- Click Finish.
- Click File > Exit to close Installation Manager.
