Install the Update Installer for WebSphere Software
The Update Installer for WebSphere Software has a new installation program for V7.0, Installation Wizard for the Update Installer.
A single installation of the Update Installer can be used to install maintenance on the following WebSphere software products:
- IBM WAS Version 6.0.2.21 or above
- IBM WAS ND V6.0.2.21 or above
- IBM WAS - Express V6.0.2.21 or above
- IBM Application Client for WAS V6.0.2.21 or above
- Web server plug-ins for WAS V6.0.2.21 or above
- IBM WebSphere Extended Deployment Version 6.0.2.21 or above
- IBM HTTP Server V6.0 or above
- IBM WebSphere Process Server V 6.0 or above
- IBM WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus V6.0.1 or above
The Update Installer ships on the V7.0 supplements disc.
The Update Installer undergoes regular maintenance and offers updated versions on the WebSphere software support pages. See Recommended Updates for WAS. Look under the release of the WebSphere software for a link to the Update Installer download page.
- Only one copy of the Update Installer should be installed on the system at one time for use with all V7.0 products.
- The user account that originally installed WAS v7 to be updated should be used to launch the Installation Wizard to install the Update Installer, and the same user account should be used to launch the Update Installer program to update a product.
- When a different user account uses the updi_root location, that user account must have reading and running access to that location. It must also have writing access to the updi_root/logs directory and its subdirectory.
- When a different user account is used to update the target WAS product location, that user account must have full access (reading, writing, and running) to the target location where a maintenance package is to be applied.
- [AIX] If a non-root user launches the Update Installer program, then that user account must be able to run the slibclean command; otherwise, a root user must run the slibclean command whenever the Update Installer program is used.
- Make sure that no processes from any users are locking any files in the target location where a maintenance package is to be installed.
Hardware and software requirements
The hardware and software requirements for the V7.0 Update Installer are the same as the V7.0 product or component requirements that the Update Installer is used to update. For example, we can use the Update Installer to install maintenance for WebSphere software on distributed platforms and iSeries platforms. The Update Installer does not install maintenance for WAS for z/OS.
The official statements of support for hardware and software for the IBM WAS V7.0 are on the IBM WAS supported hardware and software Web site. The Web site lists all supported operating systems and the operating system fixes and patches that install to have a compliant operating system.
The official statement of support for hardware and software for V 7.0 Update Installer backward compatibility is described inInstall maintenance packages, interim fixes, fix packs, and refresh packs.
We can install the Update Installer either with a graphical user interface or in silent mode. To install the Update Installer silently, issue the install -silent command.
The following steps demonstrate how to install the Update Installer with a GUI.
- Install one of WAS NDs that the Update Installer can update.
See Install WAS and additional software for more information.
- Insert the supplements disc in a disc drive.
Mount the drive if necessary.
- Change directories to the UpdateInstaller directory on the supplements disc.
- Issue the install command to use the GUI.
Use the ./install command for UNIX. Use the install.exe command for Windows.
- The installation wizard initializes and displays the Welcome panel.
- Linux Red Hat, Linux zSeries, and Solaris users: if we select the documentation links in the installation program for the Update Installer, the Web browser might not launch. The path to the Web browser is not included in the PATH environment variable. To resolve this problem, we can add the Web browser path to the PATH environment variable, and rerun the installation program.
- Click Next to continue.
- The License agreement panel is displayed. Read the license agreement and accept its terms. After you accept the licensing terms, the installation wizard checks for a supported operating system and prerequisite patches. If we encounter a problem such as not having the right prerequisite updates on the system, cancel the installation, make the required changes, and restart the installation.
- The Installation directory panel is displayed. Specify the destination of the installation root directory.
- Select Create a start menu icon to create a shortcut for the Update Installer. Deselect this checkbox if we do not need a shortcut for the Update Installer in the start menu. Click Next to continue.
- The Installation summary panel appears. Review the summary. Click Next to begin the installation or click Back to make changes to previous panels.
- The Installation results panel is displayed. Verify the success of the installer program by examining the completion panel.
- To launch the Update Installer upon completion of the installation, select Launch Update Installer for WebSphere Software on exit.
- Click Next to continue.
Results
The Update Installer is installed under the root directory specified during installation.
