Packaging
WAS is a family of similar products designed to deliver the right combination of economy and application serving power for your business demands. The contents of the product packages are similar, but each package has unique elements. Use this topic to familiarize yourself with the various products so that you can determine the offering that best fits your needs.
The WebSphere software platform for e-business starts with a foundation that is formed from Web application serving and integration. IBM WAS software provides the core software to deploy, integrate, and manage your e-business applications.
WAS software supports custom-built applications that are either based on integrated WebSphere software platform products or on other third-party products. Such applications can range from dynamic Web presentations to sophisticated transaction processing systems.
IBM WAS for z/OS is a full-function version of the ND product. WAS for z/OS can support e-business on any scale.
The management interface for all WAS product offerings includes a scripting interface and the console, which is a Web application.
The scripting interface and the console of the deployment manager are enhanced for managing all of the Application Server nodes in a distributed network cell. From the single point of control of the deployment manager, you can define servers, Web server processes, and clusters. You can start and stop servers and cluster members and deploy applications anywhere in the cell.
Product offerings
IBM WAS products provide a next-generation appserver on an industry-standard foundation. Each product addresses a distinct set of scenarios and needs. WAS includes the following product offerings:
WAS - Express
WAS is an affordable solution for creating, running and managing Web sites. The Express product provides a full J2EE appserver. The runtime environment addresses standards-based programming for Web and component-based programming, as well as Web services.
The administration model for this offering is a single-server environment without clustering and without centralized administration of multiple server instances.
The development environment offering is the Application Server Toolkit and a trial version of Rational Application Developer. These products have an integrated development environment (IDE) with a graphical interface for developing code artifacts, assembling the code artifacts into various archives (modules) and configuring related J2EE deployment descriptors. They are built using Eclipse V3.2.1 technology.
WAS
This product offering addresses the basic programming and runtime needs of desktop developers and single-server production scenarios. The runtime environment addresses standards-based programming for Web and component-based programming, as well as Web services.
The administration model is a single-server environment without clustering and without centralized administration of multiple server instances.
The development environment offering is the Application Server Toolkit and a trial version of a Rational Tool product.
WAS ND
This product offering addresses WAS processes that run in multiple-server production scenarios. Use the ND product to create:
- Cells
The cell profile is an ease-of-use enhancement that provides a deployment manager profile that contains a federated appserver on the same machine or partition.
- Deployment managers
The deployment manager provides centralized administration of managed Application Server nodes and custom nodes as a single cell. The deployment manager provides basic clustering and caching support, including failover support and workload balancing. Use the Edge components in the ND package to further extend the environment with sophisticated caching, load balancing, and enhanced security functions.
- Application servers
The appserver profile in the ND product can run in a deployment manager cell as a managed node or on its own as a standalone appserver.
- Custom
A custom profile has an empty node that add to a deployment manager cell to customize and use. Use the console of the deployment manager to create servers and clusters on the custom managed node. Consider the custom node as a production-ready shell, ready for customization to contain your production-level servers and applications.
See Planning to install ND for examples of common topologies that you can create with the ND product.
WAS for z/OS
This product offering addresses WAS processes that run in multiple-server production scenarios in a UNIX space in z/OS regions. Use WAS for z/OS to create:
- Deployment managers
The deployment manager provides centralized administration of federated appserver nodes and managed nodes as a single cell. The deployment manager provides basic clustering and caching support, including failover support and workload balancing.
- Application servers
The appserver profile in WAS for z/OS can run in a deployment manager cell as a federated node or on its own as a standalone appserver.
- Custom
A custom or managed node is an empty node until you add it to the deployment manager cell for customization. Use the console of the deployment manager to create servers and clusters on the managed node. Consider the managed node as a production-ready shell, ready for customization to contain your production-level servers and applications.
Installation and operating model
In V6.x, the core product binary data is separate from the data that you create as you define and customize your WAS runtime environment. You can have multiple sets of customized runtime environments. Each environment is known as a profile.
