Migrate WebSphere XD

Migrate involves collecting the configuration information from a previous release of WebSphere XD, and merging that information into a configuration for a new release. Use this procedure to migrate from WebSphere Extended Deployment V6.0.2 to WebSphere Extended Deployment V6.1.

Before you begin

The documentation is designed to provide instructions on migrating to a WebSphere® Extended Deployment V6.1 installation that includes all three product components: Operations Optimization, Compute Grid, and Data Grid. The process for migrating supports only the following two existing installations:

While both environments are supported, the steps to migrate from each type of existing installation are slightly different. For more information about the differences, refer to the detailed migrating steps.

Ensure that the cell and the nodes have the same name to successfully migrate from V6.0.2 to V6.1. Also, userid and password are optional parameters that should always be specified with the XDUpgrade command when migrating products from the command line. Because the migration utility does not check for these parameters, the migration will fail if the administrator user ID and password are not specified when security is enabled on the workstation.

About this task

WebSphere Extended Deployment V6.1 introduces new concepts that help provide a simple process for migrating WebSphere XD from V6.0.2 to V6.1. In previous releases, the deployment manager and all of the nodes were migrated all at once, which required the entire cell to temporarily shut down during the migration process. In V6.1, a more simplified strategy consists of using a rolling migration in which you first migrate the deployment manager, and then migrate each node one at a time. This strategy results in the creation of a mixed cell environment, which is a cell that contains nodes that are operating at both the 6.0.2 product level and the 6.1 product level. Since the V6.0.2 cell still exists in the environment at the same time that the new V6.1 cell is being created, ensure that your workstation has a sufficient amount of drive space to support the mixed cell environment.

A third concept introduces the capability to migrate V6.0.2, which must already exist on WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment Version 6.1, directly to V6.1. In other words, you are not required to install or migrate Network Deployment as a prerequisite for migrating V6.0.2 to V6.1. This task is not available with an installation of Version 6.0.2 on WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment V6.0.2. For more information on the migration capabilities featured in V6.1, refer to each of the following items:

Procedure

  1. Read about the tools that are available to migrate existing product configurations. The tools that you can use are included in the following list:

    • The Migration wizard migrates WebSphere Extended Deployment Version 6.0.2 to V6.1 through a graphical user interface (GUI). See Use the Migration wizard for more information.

    • The XDPreUpgrade command saves the configuration of WebSphere Extended Deployment Version 6.0.2 installed on WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment Version 6.1 into a migration-specific backup directory. See XDPreUpgrade command for more information.

    • The XDUpgrade command restores the configuration data from WebSphere Extended Deployment V6.0.2. See XDUpgrade command for more information.

  2. Migrate to a V6.1 deployment manager. See Migrate to a V6.1 deployment manager for more information.

  3. Migrate to a V6.1 node. See Migrate to a V6.1 node for more information.

  4. Refer to the table that lists the required tasks to complete a successful migration and where to perform the tasks. See Where migration tasks are performed for more information.

What to do next

Complete the migration process by using the Migration wizard or the XDUpgrade utility. The wizard is the graphical interface to the primary V6.1 migration tools, the XDPreUpgrade and the XDUpgrade commands.
