IBM WebSphere Portal Document Manager desktop components are downloaded via the Tools button in Document Manager. There are two ways for us to download and install the desktop components:

  1. Click the Tools button and select Install Desktop Components. Selecting this option opens a Document Manager desktop components window, where we can click Install now to automatically launch an installation wizard. The desktop components are installed and the appropriate server and document library information is automatically added for you, based on the current working library. After installation, a configuration wizard launches in which you set up a connection to the document library. To begin working, you only need to confirm the directory where the temporary files will be stored locally, and provide a password to the server. This task is described in more detail in Installing desktop components.

  2. In the Document Manager desktop components window, instead of Install now, we can select the Download option. Selecting this option saves the desktop components installation file dmdiinst.exe to the local computer, where manually install and configure the desktop components. To install the desktop components, navigate to the directory on the computer where you saved the dmdiinst.exe file and double-click the file to launch the installation wizard. This task is described in more detail in Configuring desktop components.

Our administrator may decide to distribute this installation file instead of enabling the download option. Contact the administrator for more information.

After the desktop components are installed, the Document Manager icon appears in the Windows Explorer under My Network Places. Before we can begin working, we need to connect to the server. This task is described in Configure desktop components.
