Annotations architecture

This topic describes and illustrates the key components used with annotations.

The IBM® WebSphere® Dashboard Framework feature set consists of several components that work together to provide model-based portlets with access to annotations.

The primary components of annotations are:

  • The Annotations engine is responsible for obtaining information about saved annotations, user data related to annotations, file attachments included with annotations, and archive logs. The Annotations engine supports Java-based alert evaluators.

  • A persistence manager that is responsible for storing annotations, user data, file attachments, and archive logs.

  • Annotations, when configured to use the database persistence manager, also depend upon:

    • An external database in which to store annotations

    • A JDBC data source obtained through JNDI on the application server.

The data source is used by the database persistence manager to access the database in which annotations are stored.

  • Annotations, when configured to use alerting, also depend upon the alerts engine.

The following diagram illustrates how these components relate to each other at a high level.
