The Relationships between Items
IWWCM item types are not independent of each other. The ways that item types relate to each other determine how various features and functions of an IWWCM Web Site will work.
Sites
- Site Areas are grouped within Sites.
- The global relationships between Presentation Templates and Authoring Templates (and therefore, Content) can be set in Sites. (These can be overruled by relationships built into Site Areas.)
Site Areas
- Site Areas form the hierarchical framework of a Site. Content items and other Site Areas are grouped within Site Areas. This allows Navigators to generate the links between the different pages that make up a site. Menus can also be based on Site Areas.
- Site Areas are also used to build relationships between Authoring Templates (and therefore, Content) and Presentation Templates.
Categories
- Menus can be generated based on the categories you define IWWCM Content items with.
Presentation Templates
- Components from the Component Library and other IWWCM items can be referenced within Presentation Templates.
- The relationships between Presentation Templates and Authoring Templates (and therefore, Content) are defined in Sites and Site Areas.
Components
- Components can either be built within Content, Sites and Site Areas, or saved as re-usable items in the Component Library.
- Components are then referenced within Presentation Templates to be displayed in the rendered web page.
- Components can also be referenced within other components.
- Components can also be added to Authoring Templates to determine which Component Types are used within a Content item.
Authoring Templates
- Authoring Templates determine which Component Types are used within a Content item.
- They also determine default values for Content Items, Profiling and Workflow.
- Sites and Site Areas build relationships between Content and Presentation Templates via Authoring Templates.
- A single Authoring Template can be linked to different Presentation Templates in different Site Areas. This means that two Content items using the same Authoring Template can display in different Presentation Templates depending on what Site Area the content is attached to.
- Menus can also be based on Authoring Templates.
Content
- Content is related to a Presentation Template depending on the Authoring Template they are generated from and the Site Area they are grouped under.
- Content Components can be referenced within Presentation Templates.
Some IWWCM Items can be used in more than one Site at the same time. E.g., A Text Component can be referenced in Presentation Templates from two different Sites.
Site Framework Relationships
- Site Areas are grouped with Sites or other Site areas. This is called the Site Framework.
- Content items are linked to Site Areas. They can be linked to a single Site Area, or to multiple Site Areas, either within the same Site or Multiple Sites.
- The Site Framework can be used to generate Navigator Components that can be referenced within Presentation Templates.
- Navigators are devices for letting users navigate their way around a Site Framework. They use the Site Framework to create links to areas in your site.
- As the links are generated from the Site Framework, changing the Site Framework automatically means all navigators in your site will now reflect your new site structure.
Presentation Template Relationships
- Relationships between Authoring Templates and Presentation Templates are set in Site and Site Area items.
- A single piece of content may be displayed in two different Presentation Templates if it is linked to different Site Areas using different Presentation Templates.
- This means a single piece of content can be given a different look and feel. Different Content Components can be displayed in different Presentation Templates from the one source Content item.
Componentization Relationships
- The Content displayed in an IWWCM generated Web Page is either entered directly into a Presentation Template, or is referenced from Components.
- Components are either stored in the Component Library or within Site, Site Areas, Authoring Templates and Content items.
- The content of Components referenced from Site, Site Areas or Content items that have the same "label" will change depending on the current Content, Site or Site Area.
- Components referenced from the Component Library in different Presentation Templates can be "dynamic" or "static".
- The content of dynamic Components, such as Menus and Navigators, will change depending on their properties and the current Content and/or Site Area.
- Static Library Components, such as Text and Image Components that are referenced directly inside a Presentation Template will always appear the same on a Presentation Template no matter what the current Content or Site Area is.
