Overview

Content items are used to store web page specific content. They also record information on Categories and Keywords that the Web Content Management (WCM) application uses to generate further pieces of content such as Menus.

Authoring Templates

When a new content file is created, the Content Creator firsts selects an Authoring Template, where each Authoring Template defines what Components are available within a new piece of Content. Default values may have also been entered and will appear as default settings in new Content. The Authoring Template you choose, in combination with the Site Area the Content is grouped under, will determine what Presentation Template the Content will display in.

Content Components

The "content" of Content items are stored in Components. Authoring Templates determine the Components available in Content items. Default values may have already been set for some Components.

Using Categories to Profile Content

When profiling Content it is important to consider how a Menu will use your Categories in a Search:

  • Menus search both upwards and downwards within groups of Categories.
  • If you base a Menu on a top-level Category, all Content profiled with Categories belonging to that top-level Category would appear in the Menu.
  • If you base a Menu on a parent level Category, all Content profiled with the parent level Category or its children or its Parents will appear in the Menu.
  • If you base a Menu on a child level Category, all Content profiled with the child Category or its Parents will be returned by the Menu.

See Profiling in the Site Creation Guide for further information.

Profiling Content

It is recommended that, in most cases, only child level Categories be used to profile Content. This will give you more control over what will display in Menus.

Taxonomies

Taxonomies cannot be used in WCM Menu Searches. If you would like to have a Menu return results based on Content profiled with any Category in a Taxonomy, create a single Top-Level Category and base the Menu on the Top-Level Category.
