One WebSphere administrative cell versus many
Figure 3-11 depicts how an application can be implemented over multiple WAS Network Deployment cells.

The example application runs simultaneously in two cells, each hosted on a different physical machine. WebSphere Load Balancer is used as an IP sprayer to distribute incoming HTTP requests among the two cells, presenting a single image of the application to the clients.
Each cell is administered independently, since each cell has its own set of XML configuration files.
Tip: A different version of the application can be run in each cell. In addition, because the cells are isolated from one another, different versions of the WAS software can be used in each cell.
There are no hard limits on the number of nodes and appservers that can be used in a single cell. However, the choice of whether to use a single or multiple cells can be made by weighing the advantages and disadvantages.
