Option 2: Side-by-side migration
Option 2 of this scenario shows how to migrate from an earlier to a later release of IBM MQ when using the side-by-side migration method. With a side-by-side migration, you install the latest version of IBM MQ alongside the earlier version that we want to migrate from. Queue managers and applications continue to be associated with the earlier release until you migrate them to the later release.
Before starting
The starting point for this scenario is the initial IBM MQ Version 9.1 IT configuration described in Overview: Initial IT configuration.
Before starting this task, follow the instructions in Create a sample initial IT configuration to set up the sample configuration.
About this task
When you follow the side-by-side migration method described in this scenario, you install the later version alongside the earlier version in an alternate location. Since you uninstall the earlier version before starting any queue managers in the later version, we can assign your installation of the later version of IBM MQ to be the primary installation. For more information about the primary installation, see Primary installation.
- Installing IBM MQ Version 9.2 using the launchpad
Use the installation launchpad and wizards to install IBM MQ Version 9.2 alongside Version 9.1 on Windows.- Stopping the queue manager
Before migrating to a later version of IBM MQ, we must first stop the queue manager and back up the queue manager data.- Uninstalling the earlier version
Uninstall the earlier version of the product using the Windows control panel.- Making IBM MQ Version 9.2 the primary installation
Before you start any queue managers in the new IBM MQ Version 9.2 installation, we can, optionally, make IBM MQ Version 9.2 the primary installation.- Associating the queue managers with IBM MQ Version 9.2
Use the Transfer queue managers wizard to associate the sampleQM queue manager with your new IBM MQ Version 9.2 installation.- Verify the IBM MQ Version 9.2 installation
After installing IBM MQ Version 9.2, use IBM MQ Explorer to verify that the queue managers and queues have successfully migrated from the earlier release then verify that we can use the sample application.Parent topic: Implement the solution using the graphical user interface
