Use Installation Manager or the installer to install packages
Choose an installation method to determine how we install software packages.Install packages using one of these installation methods:
- Installation Manager
- Installation Manager installer; the installer is sometimes referred to as an installation kit or Installation Manager installation package
Understand the differences
Selecting from the two methods depends on whether we have Installation Manager installed on our computer.
Each method requires different commands for installing packages. With an understanding of the parameters for using each method, we can determine the method that best fits your installation scenarios.
Notes on using Installation Manager:Notes on using Installation Manager installer:
- Use Installation Manager for typical scenarios.
- Installation Manager must be installed on the computer.
- When Installation Manager is installed, we can record response files or edit saved or sample response files. We can record a response file on platforms that use the GUI or use console mode to generate a response file.
- We can view installation history in the GUI, from the command-line, or in console mode.
- We can use Installation Manager to search for and to update to later versions of Installation Manager.
- We can install Installation Manager and a package together by editing a response file or creating a script.
- Shortcuts for Installation Manager and viewing installed packages are created.
- Not all packages support the use of the installer, check your package documentation to determine if the installer is supported.
If we specify a directory location for the agent data location using the -dataLocation option and the location is not the default value, the specified location must be used each time that we use the Installation Manager installer using the -dataLocation option. Changing the location can damage the installation data. This damage can prevent you from modifying, updating, rolling back, or uninstalling installed packages. For more information, see Agent data location.
- It is not supported to run Installation Manager in group mode using the installer. For more information about installing in group mode, see Group mode roadmaps and silent installations.
- Use an earlier version of the Installation Manager installer after we used a later version of the installer can cause corruption. Before we use imcl commands with different versions of the installer, review Considerations when using the imcl command from the Installation Manager installer.
- To use a later version of the Installation Manager installer, we must manually find and download the installer.
- We can use the installer to manage packages without installing Installation Manager.
- We cannot record a response file using the installer. We can edit saved or sample response files to use with the installer commands.
We can use a combination of both. We can use the installer to install Installation Manager, and then use Installation Manager commands to record a response file to use during installations.
