Generate and using a default monitor model

When you enable business monitoring support for a process application in the Process Designer, a monitor model is automatically generated based on the tracking points, auto-tracked fields, and default KPIs defined in the business process definition. You can run this generated monitor model on the Process Center server or you can deploy it with a process application snapshot on a process server.

Verify that the following prerequisites are complete:

To deploy a monitor model with a process application snapshot, the user or group to which you belong must have been assigned the Deployer administrative security role.

If you are not currently assigned to the Deployer role, perform the following task before you enable business monitoring and deploy monitor models:

  1. Log in to the administrative console.

  2. Click Users and Groups > Administrative User roles or Users and Groups > Administrative Group roles.

  3. Select your user or group to open it.
  4. Under Roles, select Deployer and click OK.

The monitor model collects the data that is transmitted via monitoring events and publishes it to a custom monitoring dashboard in Business Space so you can view it.

Tip: To collect and generate the most useful monitoring data possible, define autotracking fields, custom tracking groups, or both. See the links at the end of this topic for more information. To generate a default monitor model for your process application...

Procedure

  1. Log in to IBM Process Designer.
  2. Open the process application that you want to monitor by clicking Open in Designer.

  3. On the Process App Settings page, expand Monitor Settings.

  4. Select the Enable process monitoring through IBM Business Monitor option and save your changes.
  5. Do one of the following, depending on whether you want to generate a monitor model for use on the Process Center server or on a production or test process server.
    Option Description
    Process Center server

    1. Click File > Update Tracking Definitions to enable business monitoring and Business Performance Data Warehouse monitoring. The monitor model is generated and deployed.
    2. Open the Inspector and run the process. Monitoring data is captured and displayed in the dashboard.
    Process server

    1. Create a snapshot of the process application.
    2. Deploy the snapshot on the target process server. The monitor model is generated and deployed; monitoring data is captured and displayed in the dashboard.

What to do next

Log in to Business Space and use the custom dashboard to view the monitoring data for the process application.

Be aware that each time you click File > Update Tracking Definitions, files are written to the local temporary directory. Over time, the directory can become full and you must manually delete these files. See Troubleshooting business monitoring for process applications.

Tip: The Process App Settings editor is always available from the drop-down list in the toolbar and cannot be closed.
