The dialog tag widget
The dialog tag widget is displayed for individual resources. Users can use the tag widget to assign new tags to a resource and to see which tags have already been assigned to that resource.
The widget is structured as follows:
Only the tag or other change applied in the current view mode - public or private - is saved. Example: If a user adds a tag in public mode, then moves to private mode, adds an another tag, and clicks Save, only the last tag applied given in private mode is saved. The same applies to other user actions, such as deleting a tag. The widget provides an information text to inform the user about this behavior.
- The top of the tag widget shows a headline that indicates which resource is being tagged.
- The next area down shows the community tags. These are tags that other users have applied to the resource as public tags. Community tags are sorted by their frequency, that is based on how often they have been applied. This indicates their importance for all users who applied them. You can configure how many tags are shown; if there are more tags that you have configured for display, the tags are fetched based on their importance for users, that is based on how often the tags have been applied. Users can modify tags that are displayed as community tags only if they have the MANAGER role on the virtual resource with the affected tag. - Further down the widget shows personal tags, that is tags the user who invoked the widget has applied to the resource. These tags are also displayed in alphabetical order. The widget always shows all personal tags that the user has assigned to the resource. As the user applied all tags that are displayed as personal tags, the user can delete these tags. Note that there are two kinds of personal tags: public and private tags. For more detail refer to the topic about public and private tags. Public tags are visible to other users, whereas private tags are tags can only be viewed by the user who applied them. The widget allows users to switch between the two modes for public and private tags. Depending on the mode that the user selected, only that user's personal public tags or the user's personal private tags are being displayed.
- The bottom of the tag widget provides an input field that allows users to specify new tags. The following features apply:
- Users can specify single tags or multiple tags separated by commas or blanks. Both characters are valid separators. This also means that a single tag cannot contain either of these characters. When a user specifies a new tag, the portal checks the tag for its validity.
- A regular expression is used to define the set of valid characters. For details refer to the parameter reference topics for tagging and rating and the CP configuration service topic.
- When a user types an invalid character as part of a tag, the portal shows a message.
- The tag widget provides a type-ahead feature for users who type new tags. For details refer to the section about the type-ahead feature for tagging in the topic about How tagging and rating works in the portal.
- Users can specify a locale for tags that they apply. The widget provides a dropdown menu to select from the list of supported locales provided.
- Whether a tag is assigned as public or as private tag depends on the mode tab that the user selected before applying the tag.
- In a default portal installation the dialog tag widget is available for tagging pages and portlets. Users can tag these resources as follows:
- Users can tag the current page by opening the Action menu and selecting Tag.
- Users can tag a portlet by selecting Tag this portlet from the portlet context menu.
- When the user clicks the Save button, the tag is persistently assigned and a success message is shown.
