Portal farm setup options
Before you begin the installation and setup process, learn about the different configuration options for a portal farm.
Choose one of the following approaches to setup each instance in the farm:
- WebSphere Portal can be simply installed on each server that is to contribute to the farm. This process can be expedited using either of the following approaches:
- Virtualization technology, such as VMWare, can be used to mass-replicate identical OSs installed and configured with WebSphere Portal.
- Portal cloning, the ability to mass-replicate a fully configured WebSphere Portal installation, can be used to quickly setup a series of identical servers without requiring virtualization technology. Go to WebSphere Portal Zone on developerWorks and search on "cloning" to find the latest version of this guide.
- A single installation and profile can be shared across multiple systems. With some specific configuration changes to ensure server-specific mutable files go outside the shared filesystem, it is possible to very quickly create new portal instances (processes) by sharing the installation and configuration filesystem of the original server and simply starting a new server instance, as you would on the original server. Because the server configurations are shared, all farm instances have the exact configuration and reuse the exact some database domains.
