Migrate documents from Portal Document Manager to Quickr Document Libraries
With WebSphere Portal v6.1, Document Manager components are no longer installed with the product. Document Manager features are now consolidated in IBM LotusQuickrto provide improved performance, scaling, and modularity; and to align with the unified strategy for document management solutions.
Entitlements to Lotus Quickr within the WebSphere Portal offerings
The WebSphere Portal offerings now include two entitlements to Lotus Quickr. One of these entitlements is available specifically for the offerings and products whereby WebSphere Portal Document Manager is replaced with Lotus Quickr Document Libraries:WebSphere Portal Enable
For more information on entitlements included with the offering or product you have purchased, go to the IBM Software license agreements search site, enter the offering or product name in the Search criteria field, and click the Search icon.WebSphere Portal Express

Benefits of moving documents to Lotus Quickr document libraries
Consider the benefits of replacing WebSphere Portal Document Manager with Lotus Quickr Document Libraries:
- Scaling and performance
Because WebSphere Portal can only run in one Java™ Virtual Machine (JVM), additional embedded components such as Document Manager can affect server performance negatively. Removing a large service like Document Manager and entitling it to run on a separate, dedicated JVM will deliver improved portal and content performance and scalability.
- Modularity
Analysis of customers using WebSphere Portal Document Manager indicates, among other observations, that many customers deploy WebSphere Portal Document Manager to a subset of their total portal user base. By installing Lotus Quickr on a separate system, you can deploy document libraries in a way that affects only those users who need this capability.
- Strategic endurance
Lotus Quickr is the product that now unifies all previous document management solutions across the IBM Lotus Dominoand WebSphere Portal offerings. For this reason, WebSphere Portal Document Manager is no longer available starting with WebSphere Portal v6.1.
The Microsoft™ Windows™ and Microsoft Office connectors for WebSphere Portal Document Manager are not supported for use with Lotus Quickr. At this time, the equivalent Lotus Quickr Connectors are not entitled with any WebSphere Portal offering. Therefore, upgrading to the full Lotus Quickr product is required.
General process for moving documents to Lotus Quickr document libraries
To replace WebSphere Portal Document Manager components with Lotus Quickr Document Libraries, follow this general process:
- Install Lotus Quickr Services for WebSphere Portal separately from WebSphere Portal.
There are multiple ways to achieve this, including installing Lotus Quickr on a separate logical or virtual partition from the portal server or on a different physical server.
- Use the Document Library template that is included in Lotus Quickr Services for WebSphere Portal.
- After the Lotus Quickr server is installed, delete all templates except the Document Library template from the server.
This is important because the IBM WebSphere Portal license does not entitle you to use other templates on the Lotus Quickr server. Installing the WebSphere Portal Document Manager migration tool (described below) adds a template that is a child of the Document Library template; this template is not subject to the restriction above.
- Establish single sign-on (SSO) capability between the Lotus Quickr server and the WebSphere Portal server.
- For complete information, refer to the IBM Lotus Quickr Information Center.
Migration and integration of document management solutions
If you are storing documents in WebSphere Portal Document Manager V5.1 or v6.0, you can use the WebSphere Portal Document Manager migration tool to migrate library content from WebSphere Portal Document Manager to Lotus Quickr services for WebSphere Portal. For detailed information on this utility, see Document #4022083, WebSphere Portal Document Manager migration tool.If you are storing documents in WebSphere Portal Document Manager from previous releases and they are referenced by Web Content Manager, be aware that while you can store files and content outside of Web Content Manager – for example, in Lotus Quickr – and link to them from Web Content Manager, this technique does not provide complete integration. A future release of Web Content Manager will support full-scale integration with Lotus Quickr.
Additionally, a migration utility will be available in the future to move documents from WebSphere Portal Document Manager into Web Content Manager while still providing link integrity to the documents. Details on this planned migration utility, its availability, and documentation, will be announced as they become available.
Options for integrating Lotus Quickr within WebSphere Portal
Consider the ways in which you can integrate Lotus Quickr within the context of WebSphere Portal:
Integration option Description Reference IBM My Places Portlet The My Places portlet provides a more integrated way to work with a personalized list of Lotus Quickr places to which a user has access. From the My Places portlet, you can display all Lotus Quickr places that you are a member of, public places, all places to which you have access, and places that you have marked as Favorites. Display a place by clicking a place link in the My Places portlet. An administrator can configure the portlet to retrieve places from specific J2EE and Domino servers. Download the My Places Portlet from the IBM WebSphere Portal Business Solutions Catalog. http://catalog.lotus.com/wps/portal/portal/details?catalog.label=1WP1001GJ
IBM Feed Reader Portlet Any page within Lotus Quickr can be rendered as an ATOM feed. The IBM Feed Reader portlet enables users to read RSS and Atom feeds from various content providers, including news, information, and solutions Web sites. Users can add and delete multiple feeds from various content providers. This portlet supports basic authentication and time-out parameters. The portlet also supports proxy authentication. The IBM Feed Reader portlet is AJAX-based, providing improved client-side performance. To consume Lotus Quickr pages within the context of a WebSphere Portal page, direct the Feed Reader portlet to Lotus Quickr content.

Also included in the catalog is documentation on how to implement and configure the Web Application Integrator Portlets.
REST Services Builders for IBM WebSphere Portlet Factory Another area where the entitlement has changed is the ability to utilize Lotus Quickr APIs to create portlets and widgets within the context of WebSphere Portal. Lotus Quickr implements many of its features using a REST-based API, with more REST-based features planned. WebSphere Portlet Factory provides a set of builders to speed the creation of portlets based upon REST.
