Manage composite application pages

Overview

Composite applications consist of portal pages containing the portlets used by teams.

To create new pages or to edit existing pages of an application template or a particular application, use...

Manage pages in application templates and application instances is similar to managing pages in any portal context, with some exceptions.

If you have application pages derived from a template that uses both public wires and private wires for portlets, the public portlet wiring from the template is propagated to the pages of the application instances created from the template. However, the private portlet wiring in the template is not propagated to the pages of the application instances created from the template. Private wires are not copied from templates to instances of applications.

From the list of all pages in the application template or the particular application, you can perform several actions:

When you have completed all layout tasks for template or application pages, click Save to save changes. Or, click Cancel to cancel any page layout changes that you made in this session.

When you have completed all layout tasks for application pages, click Done to save changes to application layout.

Edit page properties

When you create or edit a page for a template or an application, you specify the page title, unique name, friendly URL, theme, page properties, the markup type for the page, and the page cache options. You can also choose to add an icon to the page and to make the page a private page.

  1. Click New page or Edit Page Properties.

  2. Type a title for the page.

  3. Type a unique name for the page.

  4. Type a friendly URL name for the page.

Friendly URLs and URL mappings in the portal must not match, partially overlap, or otherwise interfere with each other. For example, do not use strings such as home, ibm, or ibm.com, and do not use strings that have already been used as friendly URLs or URL mappings in the portal.

  5. Select and preview a theme to define the visual design (fonts, colors, images) of the page.

If you choose to let the page inherit the parent theme, the page will use the theme that is specified on the server for the site. All template or application pages that inherit the parent theme will have a uniform appearance, typically the visual design used to establish the brand identity of the organization or community.

  6. Enter the file name of a graphic if you want to add an icon to the page.

  7. Choose to make the page a private page.

  8. Specify the page properties:

    • This page can be added to a user's My Favorites list.

    • Other pages can share the contents of this page.

  9. Specify the page type and set page layout properties.

The default page type is Standard Portal Layout.

  10. Specify the cache options for the page:

    Option Choices
    Cache Scope

    • Non-shared cache for single user
    • Shared cache across users

    Cache Expiration

    • Cache always expires
    • Cache never expires
    • Cache expires after the specified number of seconds

Cache Access Control Ignore access control in caches

  11. Click OK to save settings.

Edit page layout

When you edit the layout of a template or application page, you can change its content, appearance, locks, and inter-portlet wiring. Page content comprises the set of portlets that can be deployed as components on the pages of applications assembled from templates. Portlets that cannot be deployed as components on application pages are not available for selection.

  1. Click the Edit Page Layout icon.
  2. On the Content page, select a page format and add the portlets that you want to appear as components on each page of the application.
Only portlets that are available for deployment as application components are available for selection.

  3. On the Appearance page, select the theme skin that you want applied to the components (portlets) on each page of the template or application.

  4. On the Locks page, lock or unlock the page and its contents (the components on the page).

The locked or unlocked state of the page propagates to the components on the page.

You can also choose to lock or unlock the Delete option for particular components on a page.

  5. On the Wires page, enable the transfer of information between application components that are implemented as cooperative portlets.

If none of the components deployed on the pages of the template or application are cooperative portlets, the Wires page will be blank.

  6. Click Done when you have finished editing the layout of the template or application page.

Change page status

Application pages are active by default. You can deactivate a page to prevent application users from working with pages that you are editing. The Status column of the page list indicates whether a page is active or inactive.

  1. To deactivate a page, click the Active link in the Status column and confirm that you want to deactivate the page.
  2. To activate a page, click the Inactive link in the Status column and confirm that you want to activate the page.

Reorder pages

The first page in the list is the one that opens first in the application template or the application instance. You can change the order of the pages in the template or the application by clicking the Move icons.

  1. To move a page up one row in the list, click the Move Up icon.
  2. To move a page down one row in the list, click the Move Down icon.

Delete pages

You can delete any page of a template or application if role gives you permission to delete pages. Deactivate the page before you attempt to delete it.

  1. For the inactive page that you want to delete, click the Delete icon.
  2. Confirm the deletion.
The page is removed from the application template or the particular application.
