System-wide roles

Web Content Management is a component of WebSphere Portal. As such, the deployment process for Web Content Management systems is a sub-process of the overall WebSphere Portal deployment process. Many of the overall system planning and deployment tasks will be performed by users with system-wide responsibilities.

The process of deploying the servers that make up a WebSphere Portal system is documented in the WebSphere Portal planning and installation sections. The tasks performed by the following users are detailed in those sections of the Information Center.

Not all the following roles will be required for your deployment depending on the size and complexity of the system being deployed, but all aspects of these roles will need to be considered during any system deployment.

The project manager

Large complex deployments will require a project manager to ensure that there are sufficient resources available to deploy a system, that the correct users have been assigned to the project and that the tasks required to deploy the system occur at the correct time in the overall deployment process.

The technical architect

A technical architect is responsible for designing the overall topology required for the entire system.

The database architect

A database architect is responsible for designing the structure and configuration of the databases and repositories used in the system.

The database administrator

A database administrator is responsible for deploying the database servers and data repositories based on the architecture developed by the database architect.

The WebSphere Portal administrator

A WebSphere Portal administrator is responsible for the overall deployment and management of the servers in a WebSphere Portal deployment, including those used by the Web Content Management system, based on the architecture developed by the technical architect. The WebSphere Portal administrator will deploy any required Web content environments at the same time as deploying the wider WebSphere Portal system.

The security specialist

A security specialist is responsible for securing the overall system including access control strategies and firewalls.

The performance engineer

A performance engineer is responsible for ensuring that the entire system is deployed and configured for maximum performance.

The technical writer

A technical writer is responsible for documenting any processes or procedures involved with maintaining and using the overall system. Some training courses may also need to be written and delivered.

The data analyst

A data analyst is responsible for analyzing usage reports and logs to ensure a system is healthy and functioning correctly.
