Converting document formats

Convert a document so that we can edit it in Document Manager.

Document Manager has a convert feature that can change the file type of the selected document. Converting a document enables us to use the Portal Rich Text Editor to work the document, even if you do not own the editing application that was originally used to create the document. The document created by the conversion process contains the text content of the original document, but might not retain certain features and settings. For example, style sheet settings in a Word document may be lost during conversion to the Rich Text Editor format.

When you convert a document, the converted document replaces the original document. Therefore, we lose the original document. To save a copy of the original document, make a document version when converting the document. For more information about document versions, see Creating a document version.

To convert a document, complete the following steps:

  1. Click the document name.

  2. Click More Actions and select Convert from the drop-down list.

  3. A window opens with a list of all the possible conversion formats for the document.

  4. Select the file type for the converted file from the drop-down list.

  5. Click Convert to convert the document, or Cancel to cancel the action and return to the document preview.
