Scenario for running a workflow

This scenario describes how users might interact with the a workflow titled "Bring New Hires On Board" that captures some of the tasks that need to be completed when a new employee joins an organization.

  1. The hiring manager, Amadou Alain, navigates to the Manage New Hires application that includes workflow tasks related to hiring a new employee.

  2. He uses the Workflow List portlet to check the status of all existing new hires in the Manage New Hires application.

  3. While logged in, Amadou starts a new workflow for a new employee, Heather Reed by entering her name in the Workflow List portlet to start a new workflow.

  4. He then claims and opens the initial task created for that workflow.

  5. He adds Heather Reed to the Employee Information System (EIS) for the organization.

  6. He navigates to e-mail to check Heather's equipment request and sees that she has requested a special system that will be quite a bit more expensive than what is generally allowed.

  7. Amadou returns to the Manage New Hires application and the On Boarding page and clicks on the already opened Purchase New Equipment page.

  8. He fills out a form that requests a personal computer that is more expensive than the allowed amount.

  9. A task is generated for Lucille Suarez (2nd line manager) to approve the larger purchase.

  10. Lucille goes to the Manager Workbench and sees a new task in the Task List portlet and clicks on the new task.

  11. She completes the task of approving the purchase by clicking the Approve button in the Current Task portlet.

  12. Rita Ferrar (the Office Manager) logs on to IBM WebSphere Portal and sees that she has been assigned the task to allocate office space for a new hire.

  13. She completes the office allocation task for Heather.

  14. The workflow task for the new employee is now listed with a status of "Complete" in the Workflow List portlet.
