Considerations:
Will you use a custom user registry, a database user registry configuration, or an LDAP user registry for authentication?
Will you set up SSL for WebSphere Portal? For the LDAP user registry?
Using the Secure Sockets Layer protocol provides encrypted transmissions to ensure that data remains confidential. SSL connections can be slightly slower than unencrypted connections. In general, weigh the benefits of tighter security against the complexity of the effort that is required to configure SSL in your environment. Also consider the likelihood that transmissions inside your firewall could be intercepted, and the potential consequences of such an interception.
