Set up installation source

Installation time can vary depending on the installation source you choose. You should take the local environment into consideration when choosing an installation source. You can install directly from the CD-ROM, copy the CD contents to the local machine, or copy the CD contents to a file server.

Note: download, extract, and install the disc images on the same platform that is supported by that image. For example, if you are preparing to install on a Linux platform, download, extract, and install the Linux images on a Linux system.

 

Install from CD-ROM

This is the best choice when you are performing a limited number of installations.

The benefits include:

  • No setup required to install.

  • Provides an installation path when a file server is not available or slower than CD-ROM.

HP-UX users: Note that when you are prompted to change discs during installation, the eject button on your CD-ROM drive might not be responsive. If this occurs, unmount the drive before you can change discs. For example, if the /cdrom directory is the mount point for your drive, you can perform the following steps to change discs:

  1. Unmount the drive:

    pfs_umount /cdrom

  2. Change the disc in the CD-ROM drive.

  3. Mount the drive (/dev/dsk/c3t2d0 in this example) by entering the following command:

    pfs_mount /dev/dsk/c3t2d0 /cdrom

 

Copy CD contents to the local machine

This is the best choice if you are repeatedly installing the same product on the same machine.

The benefits include:

  • Not dependent on network or CD-ROM speed.

  • The installation program automatically finds the CDs it needs to complete installation. Follow the steps below to set up directories for the CDs.

    1. Create a directory for the product. For example, /wp510

    2. Copy the contents of each CD in to its own directory, named cd<disc_number>. For example,

    • /wp510/cdSetup

    • /wp510/cd1-1

    • /wp510/cd1-2

 

Copy CD contents to a file server

This is the best choice when you are installing on multiple machines.

The benefits include:

  • Install from a network drive may be faster than installing from a CD-ROM drive. Review your network and hardware options to determine the best choice.

  • The installation program automatically finds the CDs it needs to complete installation. Follow the steps below to set up directories for the CDs.

    1. Create a directory for the product. For example, /wp510

    2. Copy the contents of each CD in to its own directory, named cd<disc_number>. For example,

    • /wp510/cdSetup

    • /wp510/cd1-1

    • /wp510/cd1-2

    UNIX note: When using a file server as an installation source for UNIX systems, copy the CD contents from a UNIX system to the file server. If you use Windows to copy the CD contents, file permissions and symbol links are not preserved and the installation will fail. Make certain the file server supports symbolic links and file permissions for UNIX systems.
