Preparing your Windows machine
This section includes information for setting up your operating
system for IBM® WebSphere® Portal Express. Other components
might require additional steps; see the product documentation for the specific
components you want to install for information.
Perform the following steps to prepare your operating system:
- Check that the system logon user ID you will use during installation
has the following permissions and rights:
- The user ID must already exist prior to installation.
- The user ID must be a local Windows user ID that is in the Administrators
group.
- Perform the following steps to determine if a user account is a
member of the Administrators group:
- Click .
- Expand Local Users and Groups and select Groups.
- Open the Administrators group to see
what members belong to it.
- Add users to the Administrators group as necessary.
Note: A domain user ID with administrator privileges is not sufficient
for installation.
- Determine if a user ID has the appropriate access rights. When running as a service, provide the system logon user
ID and password. The user ID must have the following user rights:
- Act as part of the operating system: Windows designates this user
right as a privilege for the user account.
- Log on as a service: Windows designates this user right as a logon
right for the user account.
- Perform the following steps to view or modify user rights:
- Click .
- Double-click Local Policies and then
double-click User Rights Assignment.
- Locate and open Act as part of the operating system to
determine if this user right is enabled. If it is enabled go to the next step.
If it is not enabled, enable it.
- Locate and open Log on as a service to
determine if the user right is enabled. If it is enabled, go to the next step.
If it is not enabled, enable it.
- If you made any changes, log off and then log on to activate
the changes. In some cases you will need to reboot the system. Note: If
these changes are not made prior to starting the installation, rebooting will
be required during the installation to update the user ID with the required
privileges.
- Consider the following recommendations when installing to avoid
excessively long path names: Note: If you exceed the 259 maximum
character length, you may receive one of the following error messages during
configuration or in the wpinstalllog.txt file:
- The input line is too long.
- The syntax of the command is incorrect.
- The filename is too long.
- Use a short installation path. For example, use C:\WebSphere instead
of C:\Program Files\IBM\WebSphere.
- Specify short cell and node names; do not use names longer than
5 characters. For example, you might use scell instead of stonemillNode01cell.
- Name WAR files with less than 21 characters. If necessary, modify
the file name before installing.
- Refer to the following tech note for additional information: WKSP0016E - 'Filename is too long error' in Microsoft Windows.
