Working with the applications catalog

Use the application catalog to create, manage, and open composite applications. The applications catalog is a portlet that serves as a library of applications to which you have access. The applications that are available to you can belong to more than one category. If you are an administrator or an application manager, you can manage application lifecycle.

Before you can perform this procedure, have permission to create and work with applications.

To work with the applications catalog, follow these general steps:

  1. From the applications catalog click New to create a new application of the current category of applications displayed in the catalog. You must have permission to create applications, and set the catalog to show a particular category of application; otherwise, the New button is not available.
  2. Type a description for the application.
  3. Choose a template that will provide the properties, pages, and membership roles of the application and click OK. If you are creating a composite application, the default template is Portal Blank Template. Other templates available for selection may be based on Portal Blank Template and may define categories other than Composite Application. Administrators and application managers may have customized Portal Blank Template by creating copies of this template with new categories defined. Restriction: The default template name for composite applications, Portal Blank Template, always displays in English. It is not translated for non-English locales.
  4. In Set Component Properties, keep or change the value for the application parameter Policy Selection Attribute to assign a policy to the application and click OK. The value of the Policy Selection Attribute is defined in the application template. The value assigns a policy to all applications assembled from the template. The main policy for all composite applications created from Portal Blank Template is assigned by the Policy Selection Attribute value CompositeApp. If child policies for composite applications have been created and added to templates as application parameters, the value displayed for the Policy Selection Attribute is the one defined by the application template that assigns the desired child policy to the application. If you know the values for the Policy Selection Attribute of child policies and you want to assign a different policy to the application, type the value of the Policy Selection Attribute that you need. Tip: When you view the detailed status of the application as detected by its policy in the Policy Status portlet, you can edit the value of the Policy Selection Attribute and refresh application status information based on the newly assigned policy.
  5. Repeat Steps 1 through 4 to create additional applications and assign policies to them.
  6. After you have created one or more applications, you can perform the following basic actions within the catalog:

  7. If you are an administrator or an application manager, you can manage application lifecycle as required by the status conditions detected by their assigned policies:

Note: The Backup and Archive actions are available if, when you edit the application properties, you set the property Application Backup for Archiving and Restore to Enable backup. The Restore action is available if you have backed up or archived applications.
Now you can work with individual applications that are listed in the catalog. Parent topic: Working with composite applications
