IBM Tivoli Composite Application Manager for Application Diagnostics, Version 7.1.0.1

Best Practices

  1. Change the daystokeep value to the number of days of data you want to keep and then run the datatrim.sh script nightly. Running the script nightly allows for fewer records to be removed from the database more often. Running the command less frequently can result in the script running for extended periods of time.

  2. Run the datatrim.sh script whenever the REQUEST table has reached 5 million records.

  3. Although it is not essential to stop the Archive Agents (MS_home/bin/aactl.sh stop) prior to running the datatrim.sh script, you might want to stop the Archive Agents to avoid database deadlocks if:

    • You begin experiencing frequent database locks or timing exceptions.

    • You expect to prune large amounts of data. This might be the case if you have not been running the datatrim.sh script on a regular basis, or it is the first time you are running the datatrim.sh.

Planning is important when stopping the Archive Agents as data will be lost while the agents are down.

  4. Database tuning is essential for ITCAM for Application Diagnostics's large databases. Refer to the tuning recommendations included in the MS_home/etc/DB2-readme.txt file for IBM DB2 and in the MS_home/etc/oracle10g-readme.txt file for Oracle.
