Save credentials when sharing the same instance of Installation Manager

Create a keyring that only you can access when saving credentials using the Save Password option for a shared instance of Installation Manager. If you do not specify your own keyring, other users can use your saved credentials. Create a keyring using the -keyring and -password options with IBMIM , imcl or imutilsc saveCredential .

Multiple users can use the same instance of Installation Manager in group mode or administrator mode. Some repositories might require credentials. When you use the Save Password option without specifying a keyring that only you can access, other users can use your credentials to access the repository.

If you do not save your credentials, you are prompted to enter your credentials each time you access the repository.

Identify the current mode

To identify the mode that you are currently running Installation Manager in, click...

...and locate entry:

Notes for installing on Windows platforms

Group mode is not available on Windows operating systems.

Use the -accessRights argument to specify whether to install software in administrator or nonadministrator mode:

If you do not use the -accessRights argument in the command, the default value is set based on current user permissions. For example, when Installation Manager is installed with nonadministrator access rights, Installation Manager cannot install packages with administrator access rights. The packages are installed with nonadministrator rights.

For Microsoft Windows XP Professional users who are members of an administrator group, the default is always the -accessRights admin argument and option. For Windows XP Professional users to run in nonAdmin mode, you must pass the -accessRights nonAdmin argument explicitly in the command.

On Windows Vista, Windows 2008, and Windows 7, you must run the following commands in admin mode:

You cannot run these commands in nonadministrator or group mode. To run in nonadministrator mode, you must use these commands: userinst.exe, and userinstc.exe. Group mode is not available on Windows.

In some cases, installing IBM software products on Windows Vista, Windows 2008, and Windows 7 requires the use of the Run as administrator option. See Run silent installation commands on Windows Vista, Windows 2008, and Windows 7 for more information.

The install.exe and userinst.exe commands install Installation Manager into different directories. Changes that you make to the administrator installation of Installation Manager do not affect the nonadministrator installation of Installation Manager. And changes that you make to the nonadministrator installation of Installation Manager do not affect the administrator installation of Installation Manager. Each instance of Installation Manager must have its own installation directory and agent data location.

Notes for installing on Linux, UNIX, IBM i and z/OS platforms

You must have execute permission on Installation Manager directories, package directories and parent directories. If you do not have execute permission, Installation Manager cannot access the child directories or files. Without this permission, unexpected behavior or failures can occur when using Installation Manager.

Notes for installing in group mode

Before installing and running Installation Manager in group mode on Linux, UNIX and z/OS computers:

When you install Installation Manager in group mode, the installation location and agent data location both default to the current user's home directory. This directory might not be accessible to all users in the group. Instead of accepting the default values, define an installation location and agent data location that all users have read/write privileges to.

Check your product information center to see if the package you are installing supports group mode. If the package you are trying to install in group mode is not enabled for group mode, you receive an error and cannot continue with the package installation. You can use administrator or nonadministrator mode to install packages when group mode is not enabled.

Group mode is only available in enabled products running on Linux, UNIX, Solaris, AIX, and z/OS platforms. Group mode is not available on Windows and IBM i platforms.
