Search web, local help, and remote documentation centers together

When we have an Internet connection, we can add multiple documentation centers and searchable websites to a list for searching. When we enter a search term, all of the locations are searched at the same time from within your Installation Manager local help.

Procedure

  1. Click Help > Search.

  2. Click the arrow to expand the Search scope description. The Default search scope set contains the local help that was installed with Installation Manager.

  3. Click the current search scope set. Example: Default. The Select search scope sets window opens.

  4. Click New to create a search scope set, and then enter a name for the search scope set.

  5. Select the name of the search scope set.

  6. Click Edit. The Advanced Settings window for the search scope set opens. The search scope contains the local help that is installed with the product by default.

    1. We can disable the local help from the search scope by clearing the Enable search engine option.

    2. When the search engine is enabled, we can select the Search only the following topics option and select the working set of content to search only certain types of content.

Installation Manager is not installed with all of the working set of content listed. For example, Installation Manager does not include documentation on managing and composing requirements.

If we select a working set of documentation that is not installed with Installation Manager, your search yields no results.

  7. Click New to add a search engine type to the search scope.

If we delete a search engine from the tree pane, we are not asked for confirmation of the deletion.

  8. Select a search engine type.

    • Local help: The documentation that is installed with the product.
    • Knowledge Center: We can add a URL from a remote documentation center.

    • Web search: We can add URL from a web search to include with your Installation Manager search results.

  9. Click Finish.

  10. Enter the details of your search engine.

    • Knowledge Center:

      • Enter a name for the documentation center.

      • Enter a description.

      • Enter the URL and, if applicable, select the plug-ins to include in your help search. See example URLs.

We must remove the index.jsp text from documentation center URLs.

    • Web search:

      • Enter a name for the web search.

      • Enter a description.

      • Enter the URL template. We can capture the URL template by copying the web query from the browser address field and replacing the search word with {expression}. See example URLs.

Repeat steps 8-11 to add more search engines.

  11. Click OK to close the search scope and click OK to close the Select search scope sets window. The name of your search scope is listed next to the Search scope arrow. Click the arrow to expand the details of the search scope.

  12. Enter a search term in the search expression field and click Go.

Results

Review your search returns. For web searches, the result is always one return. We must click the link to view all of the results of the search within the search pane.
