Designing process interactions for business users
After you deploy a business process definition that you have built in Process Designer to the Process Portal, a business user might interact with it in a number of ways. The user might be the one to launch the process, or the user might be assigned individual activities in the process.
The user might have more of a management role, for example, monitoring the progress of the process execution, or the user might be called upon as an expert to collaborate with another user on an activity. It is important to keep each of these roles, and their business goals, in mind when you are designing the different features of your process.
- Configure a role-based business user interface
Before you deploy your process application, you need to configure different elements in the business process definition (BPD) to control the types of actions that different business users can perform in the Process Portal, the types of data they can search for and view, and the dashboards that they can access.- Developing flexible and efficient process applications
After you have mapped out your process to include all of the normal task flows for normal process execution, you can optimize your process to make it more flexible and efficient for the business users who will be working with the application in the Process Portal.- Set up collaboration features for business users
BPM provides several features that allow business users to collaborate with other users while working with processes.- Enabling task management
Many of the business users who are interacting with your applications in the Process Portal will be assigned tasks that appear in their work list, grouped according to priority and upcoming due dates. You can configure the activities in your BPD to have a generated due date that will affect, for example, which task appear categorized as "At Risk" or "Overdue" in their list and in the views seen by management. You can also enable management to view reports and charts that show the current progress of running process instances.
- Generate names for process instances
When you run a BPD, IBM BPM creates a default name for the process instance. This name is visible to business users in the Process Portal, allowing them to distinguish between different instances of a process as they complete their work. In Process Designer, you can change the way the process instance names are generated for a BPD in the Process Portal.
