IBM BPM, V8.0.1, All platforms > Migrating and upgrading your IBM BPM environment > Migrating from previous versions
Migration methods
There are several migration methods to choose from when moving to a new version of IBM BPM.
- Artifact migration
Artifact migration uses a parallel target production environment that is configured differently from the source production environment. You import the applications from the source production environment into development tools and migrate the applications using the migration procedures of the development tools.
- Application migration
Application migration uses a parallel target production environment that is configured differently from the source production environment. You redeploy the applications from the source environment into the target environment.- Runtime migration
Runtime migration uses migration procedures and tools to migrate topology configuration, applications, and databases to the new version of IBM BPM. The runtime migration process replicates the source production configuration into the target environment. During the migration process, the target production environment replaces the source production environment, so that the two environments are never operated in parallel.- Migration method considerations
To determine the most appropriate migration method for migrating to a newer version of IBM BPM, analyze the amount of stateful data in the environment, the amount of downtime your system can support, and whether you want to preserve your previous configuration.
