Create subnodes
Subnodes can be created by using a number of methods.
You can create a subnode by using one of the following methods:
- Create a subnode using the New Agent wizard
- Create a subnode from the data sources tree
- Create a subnode in the Agent Editor
- Subnode configuration
When a subnode type is defined, a single configuration section is defined specifically for that subnode.
Parent topic:
Use of subnodes
Create a subnode using the New Agent wizard
Use the Data Source Location page in the New Agent wizard to create a subnode.
Procedure
- On the Data Source Location page, click Data source groupings in the Monitoring Data Categories area.
- In the Data Sources area, click A Subnode Definition .

- Click Next.
- Complete the Subnode Information page as follows to define the new subnode:
- In the Name field, type the name of the subnode you are creating.
- In the Type field, enter 1-3 characters (by using numbers, letters, or both) to identify the type of the subnode you are creating.
- In the Description field, type a description for the subnode you are creating.
- Click the Show nodes attribute group for this type of subnode check box to hide or display the attribute group (Availability node).

- Click Next.
- Complete the Initial Subnode Data Source Location page as follows to select a data source as the first item in the new subnode:
- In the Monitoring Data Categories area, click Data from a server.
- On the Initial Subnode Data Source page, select a type of data source for the new subnode, and click Next.

- Click Next.
- Define the initial data source for the subnode. See the chapters about specific data sources in this user's guide. Click Next after the final data source-specific page.
- If your agent contains custom configuration properties or if the data source selected requires configuration, use the Subnode Configuration Overrides page to choose the configuration properties. In the Subnode Configuration Overrides page, choose the configuration properties that you want for the subnode at the agent level. Then, choose the configuration properties that you want to vary for each subnode.
Use Move, Copy, and Remove to specify the configuration properties as described in (Configure a subnode).

Create a subnode from the data sources tree
Use the data sources tree in the New Agent wizard to create a subnode
Procedure
- On the Data Source Definition page, right-click an agent name in the Attribute Group Information pane. To create a subnode definition click Add Subnode Definition.

Enter information about the new subnode definition in the wizard and then click Next.Figure 6. Defining a new subnode
On the Initial Subnode Data Source page, select a type of data source for the new subnode, and then click Next.Figure 7. Initial Subnode Data Source page
- Define the initial data source for the subnode. See the chapters about specific data sources in this user's guide. Then, click Next after you complete the final data source-specific page.
- On the Subnode Configuration Overrides page, identify which configuration properties are to remain at the agent level and which ones to vary for each subnode instance.
Properties in the Global Agent Properties list are configured at the agent level. Properties in the Subnode Properties list can be configured for each subnode. Properties can be in both lists. If the subnode property is set, it overrides the global property for that subnode. Some properties must be configured at the agent level and cannot be moved to the subnode level. For SNMP, SNMP Version cannot be copied or moved under Subnode Properties.
- Use Move, Copy, and Remove to specify the configuration properties as described in (Configure a subnode).
