Agent-specific installation and configuration

In addition to the installation and configuration information in the IBM Tivoli Monitoring Installation and Setup Guide, use this agent-specific installation and configuration information to install the Agentless Monitor for Solaris.

The Agentless Monitor for Solaris has three different options that can be configured to remotely collect metrics from the operating system:

To manually start the CIM service on Solaris, run: # /etc/init.d/init.wbem start. To manage the CIM service on Solaris, run this command: # /usr/sadm/bin/wbemadmin.

All Solaris Operating Systems expose the CIM data over an unsecured HTTP port. The default port is 5988. A system user name and password are required to access the service, and the password is only protected by a Base 64 encoding. Evaluate the protection of the network between the Agentless Solaris OS Monitor and the Solaris computer to prevent the password from being compromised.

The webmadmin service can be used to assign user IDs other than root access to the CIM namespace. Define an alternative user name to protect the root password. See your Sun Solaris documentation for more details about the CIM service.

The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) can also be used to remotely collect metrics. SNMP Version 1, SNMP Version 2c, or SNMP Version 3 can be used, depending on the configuration of the Solaris operating system. The Agentless Solaris OS Monitor supports either the Sun Management Center V4.0 or System Management Agent SNMP daemon.

Sun Management Center is a separately installable product from Sun. To monitor process lists, the Advanced System Monitoring add-on must also be installed during the Sun Management Center installation.

Start with Solaris 10, the operating system also included the System Management Agent, which can also be used to remotely collect metrics.

Each instance of the Agentless Solaris OS Monitor can be configured for one of these options. If you need to monitor your environment by using multiple protocols, create separate instances.
