iPlanet
iPlanet is part of Solaris's Sun ONE architecture, which supplies application services for development of secure internet applications. The Sun ONE Advantage Software CD Volume II contains the following software products:
- iPlanet Web Server
- iPlanet Message Queue for Java Software
- iPlanet Integration Server
These products are licensed for development and evaluation only. For the specifics of each license, read the LICENSE.txt file in the individual product directories on the CD. Technical support is available through the iPlanet community newsgroups. For information on how to purchase support or full/additional licenses, call 1-800-USA-4SUN. Additional documentation for all iPlanet products can be found at docs.iplanet.com.
This README file provides information on the following topics:
- Coexistence of iPlanet servers on a single machine
- Hardware requirements for iPlanet server installation
- Incorrect default port on Console login screen
- iPlanet Web Server port conflict with Solaris Answerbook
- Java Runtime Environment requirements
For instructions on how to configure iPlanet, see the iPlanet Deployment Guide.
Coexistence of iPlanet Servers on a Single Machine
Because individual server requirements differ, there are constraints on installation of multiple iPlanet servers on a single machine. The following iPlanet servers may be installed on the same machine as long as they are installed in separate server roots:
- Directory Server 4.16
- Portal Server 3.0SP3a
- Web Server EE 6.0 SP2
- Integration Server 3.0
- Message Queue 2.0 SP1
- Calendar Server 5.0 P4
- Messaging Server 5.1
- CMS 4.2 SP2
Each installation will prompt for a server root location. If these server products are installed on the same machine you will need to keep track of port numbers used by each server and resolve any potential conflicts during installation. The iPlanet Portal (Server component) may be installed on the same machine as the iPlanet Portal (Gateway Component). It is not recommended that Gateway component be installed on the same machine as any other iPlanet servers.
Hardware Requirements for iPlanet Advantage Server Installation
Ensure that there is sufficient disk space and memory available on your installation machine *before* beginning your installation, or your install may fail due to lack of disk space Approximate disk space requirements and default installation location for each product are as follows. Please check the requirements in each product installation directory on the CD for more detailed sizing information.
Server Size Location iPlanet Directory Server 200 MB (minimal)
1-2 GB (production)/usr iPlanet Portal Server 300 MB /opt iPlanet Instant Collaboration Pack 50 MB /opt iPlanet Integration Server 230 MB (minimal) /forte iPlanet Application Server 750 MB /usr iPlanet Message Queue 50 MB /usr iPlanet Web Server 125 MB /usr Iplanet Certificate Management System 275 MB /usr iPlanet Messaging Server 500 MB /usr iPlanet Calendar Server 500 MB /usr
Incorrect Default Port on Console login Screen
Some products on this release of the iPlanet Advantage CD use a version of iPlanet management software (Console and Admin Server) which has a known issue. The default port displayed in the Console login screen is the last successful login port number rather than the port of the currently installed server. If Console login is unsuccessful, verify that the specified port is the correct port for your installation. (You will need to keep track of the port number that was selected during installation of the admin server). If not, replace the displayed port value with the correct one for your installation and retry the login process.
iPlanet Web Server Port Conflict with Solaris Answerbook
Note that both the Solaris Answerbook server and the iWS Administration server default to port 8888. If you should see an error message about a port conflict for this port, you will have to either disable or uninstall the Solaris Answerbook Server, or uninstall iWS and reinstall it with a non-default administration port. To reinstall iWS with a non-default administration port, make sure to choose Typical (rather than Express) install option during the iWS installation.
To stop the Answerbook server (until the next reboot), become root and type
# /etc/init.d/ab2mgr stop
The Answerbook server may be (re)started by becoming root and typing
# /etc/init.d/ab2mgr start
To disable automatic restart of the Answerbook server on reboot, become root and edit the file
/usr/lib/ab2/dweb/data/config/ab2_init.template.Make sure the variable AdminAutoRestart is changed from its defaultvalue of 1 to have value 0:
dwSetParam AdminAutoRestart 0
Java Runtime Environment Requirements
It is recommended that you use the Java Runtime Environment that is provided as part of the default installation of the individual server products. Use of a different version of the JRE is not recommended. For this reason it is recommended that you do not have the environment variable JAVA_HOME set during installation.
