Admin console login fails when running in secure mode

If running a WebSphere v5 or v5.1 server in secure mode, you may not be able to log onto the WebSphere administrative console and receive the following message:

Unable to process login. Please check User ID and password and try again.

This may occur even though the server was successfully started in secure mode using the very same user id and password. This behavior is intermittent, and appears to be associated only with Microsoft Internet Explorer. To work around this problem, complete one of the following steps:

Error in the Tasks view for servers with DBCS name

After creating a server configuration with a DBCS name, an error similar to the message below will show in the Tasks view:

invalid byte 1 of 1-byte UTF-8 sequence (0x83)" at description "memento.xml" at resource "SERVER/defaultConfiguration.wsc" at folder "line 4 " at location

This task error can be safely ignored. The problem can also be avoided by manually editing the memento.xml file with the UTF-8 encoded DBCS name using a text editor.

Note: The SERVER/defaultConfiguration.wsc is the server configuration name. A server configuration called defaultConfiguration is stored under a server project called SERVER in the above sample error message.
