Testing portlets locally

You can test one or more portlet projects locally in a test server environment. For additional options to use during testing, refer to the list of related topics at the end of this section.

When using the WebSphere Portal Test Environment, the server is running against the resources that are in the workspace. Therefore, you can add, change, or remove a resource from the portlet project and the server will pick up these changes without being restarted or republished.

When you test a portlet on the local test environment server, the default theme and skin are used. To use a customized theme or skin, refer to Testing, debugging, or profiling portals

  1. Install the WebSphere Portal Test Environment using the Rational Application Developer launchpad.

  2. From the workbench, in the Project Explorer view, right-click a portlet project you want to test and select Run > Run on Server. The Server Selection dialog is displayed.

  3. To use an existing server, select Choose an existing server and choose a WebSphere Portal Test Environment server from the list.

  4. To define a new local test server, see Configuring local servers for testing portals.

  5. Click Finish. After the server starts and the portal is deployed, the Web browser that you defined opens to the URL of the portal application on the local server.
